[edit] Records of Edward Dudley
[edit] Information on Edward DudleyEdward Dudley was induced to come to America by Thomas Hampton. See Virginia Land Patents- Book 1 page 422, where a patent is recorded for 300 acres of land in Upper County of New Norfolk (later Nansemond), issued to the Rev. Thomas Hampton on May 19, 1637, for transportation of himself, Edward Dudley and four other persons. Thomas Hampton was Rector of Church at Jamestown, Va., in 1645, and was Rector of Hampton Parish, York County, in 1646. Edward Dudley first settled in York County, Va., where he remained until about 1651, when he removed to that part of Lancaster County lying south of the Rappahannock River, which in 1654, became Middlesex County. While residing in Lancaster County, he was closely associated with Thomas Sax, Rector of one of the chapels of the County. Edward Dudley was rated for tithes in 1654 as head of a family (Lancaster County Deeds, book 1654, page 177). The 1637 voyage has alledgedly been determined to have sailed from the port of Bristol, England.
