"I identify the first wife as Dorothy3 Cole, baptized Farmington, 10 July 1687, daughter of Samuel2 Cole (Carpenter John1 of Hartford, so-called to distinguish him from Farmer John1 of Farmington, Conn., and Hadley, Mass.). This identification has not been proved, but seems to me likely. She cannot be fitted into the family of Henry3 Cole of Hartford, Middletown and Wallingford, but Dorothy3 Cole of Farmington had a brother Ichabod who married Sarah14 Hopkins (Stephen3, Stephen2, John1) and settled in Middletown, perhaps accompanied by his widowed mother and sister Dorothy, about 1707."
