From the Preface:

"This book contains the genealogical records of over 950 families of early Hartford, Connecticut. The records are arranged alphabetically by family name, under which may also be found the names and records of allied families. To facilitate the search for an allied family the reader is advised to consult the index at the back of the book.

Our information indicates that early Hartford records were not kept as well as the records of some other Connecticut towns. Those that exist -- mainly church records, sexton's records, and probate records -- are in poor condition and are scattered in various places. Although not easy to locate, and difficult to read when once found, the records for the period 1645-1825 were nevertheless copied by Mr. Lucius Barnes Barbour and assembled in the manner published herein."
