Childhood
Dennis William Haines was born on 10th August 1872 at Laverton in the parish of Buckland, Gloucestershire. He was the son of Amelia Ann Haines, formerly Spire, and her husband John Thomas Haines, a veterinary surgeon. He was the fourth of the couple’s seven children, although one of his older siblings had died before Dennis was born. Sometime between 1875 and 1879 the family left Laverton and moved to the neighbouring large village of Broadway, just over the border into Worcestershire. The 1881 census finds Dennis and his parents and siblings living on the main street in Broadway.
By 1889 Dennis was working as an apprentice butcher. In May 1889 he was accused of stealing one egg, worth three farthings, from a butcher. What particularly annoyed the butcher was the fact that Dennis then called him a liar and a fool, presumably when accused. The butcher had Dennis put in custody and brought before the magistrates. Tempers appear to have cooled by the time the case reached the magistrates and the charges were dropped.
Adulthood
The 1891 census finds Dennis lodging at a house in Broadway and working as a farm labourer. Later in 1891 Dennis was again brought before the magistrates, charged with poaching offences. He and two other men had been found at ten o'clock at night with nets, pegs and a dog, clearly intending to go poaching. The three men had all been drinking. Dennis was fined £1 and also had to pay 6s 2d costs.
On 4th February 1893 Dennis was married at Broadway’s Catholic Church (St Saviour’s) to a gloveress named Ann Keyte. She was eighteen years his senior; when they married he was 20 and she 38. Dennis converted to Catholicism, being baptised at St Saviour’s on the same day that they married.
Ann already had two children from before they married, one of whom was only five years younger than Dennis himself. Less than six months after their marriage, Dennis and Ann had a son, Dennis John Haines. Sadly, he died as a baby when he was only eight months old.
At the time of their marriage, Dennis was working as a baker. He did not stay long working as a baker. By the time Dennis and Ann’s next daughter Mildred Mary Agnes was born in 1895 he was working as a farm labourer again. Three years later they had another child, Frank Richard.
In the 1901 census the family was living on Broadway’s main street. Although the house does not have a name or number in the census, it is possible from the sequence of properties in the census to be reasonably confident that they lived at 71 High Street - or more accurately the eastern third of 71 High Street. (This house was built as part of 71 High Street in the eighteenth century, but split off to become a small separate cottage before the Haines lived there. It was subsequently absorbed into neighbouring 73 High Street in the late twentieth century. Restoration of 73 High Street around 2004 removed the former cottage’s front door.) Dennis was working as a house painter.
Ann died on 29th May 1910, aged 56.
The 1911 census finds Dennis with his children Mildred and Alice living on Broadway’s main street.
In early 1912, Dennis’s mother Amelia died.
Around the same time, Dennis married again. His second wife was Alice Price, and they married on 17th February 1912. They would have another five children together between 1914 and 1926.
Dennis’s father John Thomas Haines died in 1922.
By 1934 Dennis and his family were living at Lime Tree Avenue in Broadway. A newspaper report from July 1934 records how the family was having dinner downstairs when a passer-by noticed smoke coming from a fire in one of the bedrooms. The fire was quickly put out.
Dennis died at home at 14 Lime Tree Avenue on 12th August 1939, two days after his 67th birthday. He had written a will two months earlier, which left one shilling to his son Frank “for the many un-Christian like deeds he has done”. The rest of Dennis’s estate was left to his wife Alice. Dennis was buried at St Saviour’s Catholic Church in Broadway. Alice survived him by 28 years.

County Petty Sessions. EVESHAM. – MONDAY. A TRIVIAL CHARGE. – Dennis William Haines, butcher’s apprentice, Broadway, was brought up in custody charged by James Alfred Dudfield, butcher, Broadway, with stealing one egg, value three farthings, at Broadway, on May 17th. Mr. G.L. Eades appeared for prisoner. Prosecutor asked that the case might be withdrawn, as he said prisoner might have committed act for a lark. It transpired, however, that prosecutor had insisted on prisoner being taken into custody, though told a summons would do as well. Prosecutor acknowledged that the principal reason why he had prisoner taken into custody was because he had called him a liar and a fool. Prosecutor gave evidence to the effect that prisoner took the egg from a basket in front of the shop, in presence of a number of people. The Chairman said the bench would allow the charge to be withdrawn before the evidence for the defence was entered into.
