Ann Keyte was born on 29th April 1854 at Broadway in Worcestershire, daughter of a boot binder named Mary Keyte, formerly Lies, and her husband Richard Keyte, a slater and plasterer. No baptism has been found for Ann, but the family appear to have converted around the time of her birth to Catholicism. Her older siblings had been baptised at Broadway's Anglican parish church, whilst her younger siblings were all baptised at St Saviour's Catholic church. Records of baptisms are missing for 1854 at St Saviour's and there is no sign of Ann having been baptised in the Anglican church, suggesting perhaps that she was the first of the family to be baptised Catholic. Certainly, when Ann married in 1893 in the Catholic church she did not need to convert to Catholicism first (as her husband did).
The 1861 and 1871 censuses find Ann living at home with her parents and siblings at China Square in Broadway. By 1871 she was working as a gloveress.
In 1877, aged 23, Ann had a son named George Prescott Keyte. His baptism says he was the son of Ann by a man named George Prescott, but he has yet to be identified. Whoever young George's father was, he does not appear living with George or Ann in any of the censuses. The 1881 census finds Ann and her son George living with her parents and siblings at Springfield Road. At this time Ann was working as a domestic servant.
In 1885 Ann had another son, Wilson William Keyte. His father is unknown. The 1891 census finds Ann and her two sons living with Ann's parents at China Square.
On 4th February 1893, aged 38, Ann married a baker named Dennis William Haines. As he was not a Catholic, he converted to Catholicism, being baptised on their wedding day. Dennis was eighteen years younger than Ann, being only 20 when they married - indeed Dennis was only five years older than Ann's son George. Ann was clearly pregnant she and Dennis married; less than six months later she gave birth to a son called Dennis John Haines. Sadly, he died as a baby when he was eight months old.
Ann and Dennis had two more children together: Mildred Mary Agnes in 1895 and Frank Richard in 1898. Ann's father Richard died in 1895. Dennis did not stay working as a baker for long - by the time of Mildred's birth he was described as a farm labourer, and by the time of the 1901 census he was a house painter. He would continue to work as a painter and decorator for the rest of his life. The 1901 census finds Ann and Dennis living with their two surviving children plus Ann's two children from before their marriage.
Ann died on 29th May 1910, aged 56. She was buried at St Saviour's church. Dennis outlived her by 29 years, and remarried two years after her death. Ann's mother Mary also outlived her.
