    "9 Lieut. David Shumway3 (Peter,2 Peter1), b. [bapt.] Dec. 23 1705, d. May 10, 1796; his birthplace was Boxford, Mass., but his parents removed to Oxford, Mass., in 1713, where his father was one of the pioneer settlers; in 1728, he removed to Sturbridge and took up land on what was later known as 'Shumway Hill,' being admitted into partnership with the original grantees after the grant was made to 42 petitioners Sept. 3, 1729; his lot was No. 44; he is said to have lived at first between two large rocks, putting a roof over the rocks; on this roof he could frequently hear the sound of the prowling wolves during the night; in this locality all his children were born; he filled several town official positions, and was widely respected; … his name appears as Lieut. in a Roll of Capt. Joseph Cheney's Co., Col. John Chandler's Reg't. showing he entered service Aug. 11, 1757; marched for relief of Ft. William Henry, 180 miles, 15 days service 1s. 4d.; …"
