He served in the War of 1812 with his son, Benjamin Sample, as a mounted rifleman in the Illinois Rangers under Capt. Samuel Whiteside, a volunteer in St. Clair Co., Illinois, which later became Madison Co., from 22 Aug 1812 to 13 Nov 1812, a term of two months and 23 days, for which he was paid at the rate of $6.66 per month and 40 cents per day for his horse, amounting to $18.34 and $33.60 respectively, a total of $51.94.    The first record in which David Sample was found is as the signer of a petition: "Petition No. 52 for Division of Fayette County, 17 Sep 17, 1788, signed by Benjamin Samples, David Samples, John Samples, Samuel Samples, and Samuel Samples, Jr." Source: Petitions of the Early Inhabitants of Kentucky to the General Assembly of Virginia, 1769-1792, by James Rood Robertson, John P.    "Know all men by these presents that we David Samples and Lite Towsen are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency the Governor of Virginia in the sum of Fifty pounds current money to the payment of which will and truly to be made we and each of us bind ourselves and each of our Heirs, Exers & assigns jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed & dated this 21st day of September 1791. The Condition of this obligation is that whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be Solemnized between the above bound David Samples - and Mary Towsen - of the County of Woodford. Now if it shall hereafter always appear that their is no just cause to obstruct the said marriage then this obligation shall be void or else in full force.

   Kentucky Marriage Records, Genealogy Publishing Company, 1983, p 808. Marriage was performed 22 Sep 1791, by Minister Samuel Shannon. On the same page is the record of a marriage between Benjamin Sample and Mary Gum, 11 Aug 1791, performed by the same Minister Samuel Shannon. It is likely that Benjamin and David were brothers. Benjamin Sample also appears alongside David Sample in Kentucky tax lists.

I David Samples of the County of Morgan and State of Illinois being weak of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be unto God calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul into the hand of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors not doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such worldly affects wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. First I give and bequeath to Polly my dearly beloved wife all my real and personal Estate whatsoever and all and every description of Property lawfully belonging to me at my death to have and to hold during her natural life except one cow for my son Washington Sample one for my son Aaron Samples and one for my son Jacob Sample. I also direct that at the death of my wife Polly Samples that the Estate shall be Equally divided among my children viz. William, John, Andrew, Elizabeth, Light, Jacob, Washington, and Aaron. I do also make and appoint John Sample the sole Executor of this my Last will and Testament. And do hereby utterly disallow revoke and do annul all and every other former Testaments Wills legacies bequests and Executors by me in any wise before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament.
