David Donald Hawkins owned and trained thoroughbred race horses at the Charles Town Races for 50 years. A U.S. Army veteran of WW II with the rank of sergeant, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, the American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of Jackson Perks American Legion Post 71 in Charles Town and was of the Methodist faith. He was a former member of the Charles Town Division Horsemen's Benevolence Protective Association. He and Ethel were married for 54 years.
