Daniel Palmer was baptised on 5th May 1799 at Glapthorn in Northamptonshire, son of Jane Palmer, formerly Cannam, and her husband John Swan Palmer, a carpenter.

On 3rd December 1823, aged 24, Daniel married Rainey Smith, who was from a Gypsy family, at Glapthorn.

Daniel and Rainey went on to have seven children baptised at Glapthorn between 1825 and 1845. The 1841 census finds Daniel and Rainey living with their children in Glapthorn. Daniel was working as an agricultural labourer. Rainey’s sister Rhoda and her family were listed in the same house.

The 1851 census lists Daniel, Rainey and their children at a house in Glapthorn called “Washpit House”.

Daniel’s mother died in 1852 and his father died in 1854.

Rainey died in 1860, aged 59. She was buried at Glapthorn on 30th July 1860.

Daniel appears in the 1861 census living on Upper Street in Glapthorn with three of his children. He was described as a carpenter at this time.

The 1871 census finds Daniel lodging with his older sister, Elizabeth Ginn and her family on Upper Street in Glapthorn.

Daniel died at the age of 77. He was buried at Glapthorn on 14th November 1876.

    Baptisms / 1799 / Daniel Son of John & Jane Palmer… May 5

This baptism has been linked to the Daniel Palmer who married Rainey Smith on the basis that in the censuses the adult Daniel consistently claimed to have been born around 1799 in Glapthorn, and in the 1871 census he appears living with Elizabeth Ginn, who can be identified as sister of the Daniel baptised in 1799.
