Clayton and Nettie grew up next door to each other. Nettie was still single when the Houck family hired her to take care of "the Judge", Clayton's nickname. Clayton was a confirmed bachelor when Nettie came. Clayton was 36 years old and Nettie was 28 when they married in 1907. They stayed on the Houck farm and raised four children in the same house that Clayton was born in.

They farmed with horses the same as previous generations. But they saw many changes in their lifetime. Clayton's first car ride was in Nettie's brothers' car, and Oldsmobile horseless carriage in 1907. Clayton took pride in the fact that he never learned to drive a car or own one. He preferred a horse-drawn carriage, or train, for traveling and horses in his fields. He considered himself to be a gentleman farmer, managing his farm, and watching the work being done.

Lois and her brothers went to school at 'The Abbey', same as generations before them. They played and worked in the same places as their ancestors. Oscar stayed on the farm, helping his parents run the farm. Lois went to the Normal School in Fredonia to become a teacher.
