While there are several Christian Schmidts contemporary to this one, marrying in St. Johns, I have narrowed it to this one:
Christian Schmidt marries Mariann Bernhard 4 Oct 1849; witnesses: Carl Schmidt, Philipp Koch.
Further evidence that this is him is the 1880 census: he's found at 387 Swan with wife, Marion, and that address matches the address that Karl Schmidt's brother, Christian, gave in an 1888 deposition.
Starts going by SMITH in 1850 census, and is listed that way in all subsequent census records.
