About Charles Lewis Swinger

Charles Lewis Swinger was born 21 March 1868 in Indiana, son of John E. Swinger and Matilda McReynolds. It appears that Charles' father John E. Swinger died within a few years of the birth of Charles, as his mother Matilda is recorded as marrying John Franchier on 7 February 1872 in nearby Howard County, Indiana [Indiana, Marriage Collection, 1800-1941]. Charles may have been the only child of John and Matilda Swinger [additional research necessary].

Charles married on 8 October 1888* [Source: Ancestry Member Tree] in Larned, Pawnee County, Kansas to Alice Price Taylor (1866-1932), the daughter of Lewis Robert Taylor (1833-1918) and his wife Lucy Jane Sims (1836-1902). They had at least seven children together that were listed in the 1895 Kansas Census and the 1900 United States Census.

Charles Swinger died on 13 March 1904 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana, just eight days short of what would have been his 36th birthday. It appears that his widow, Alice, raised the children by herself, as she was listed as a "widow" in both the 1910 and 1920 U.S. Census in Stafford County, Kansas. In the 1930 U.S. Census, Alice Swinger [age 64] was living with her son Roy H. Swinger [age 36] in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas, where she likely died in 1932.
