- Charles lived in Stewartstown and is buried in the cemetery there. He is believed to have arrived in this country about the time of the Revolutionary War and settled near his brother William (Betsy Givens Stewart's article, Jan 22, 1928). A listing in the "Monongalia Story - A Bicentennial History" lists Charles Stewart as "entitled to four hundred acres of land in Monongalia County on a branch of the West Fork cald Bufflew (sp) about three miles from Richards fort to include his settlement mad thereon in the year 1771".
Patents to Unclaimed Lands (Monogalia) shows a Charles Stewart as having 400 acres on the West Fork in 1771. Land Books for Monogalia show Charles Stewart with 200 acres on Buffalo Creek, April 19,1782. The West Fork and the Buffalo run though both Marion and Harrison Counties. Both counties are just south of Monongalia County and east of Jackson County.
WFT Vol 9, #2824 lists a Charles Stewart, b. 1729 m. to a Mary Oakley Johnston, b.1730,d. 1771, daughter of Judge Samuel Johnston as being parents of Jane Stewart. This same sourc lists Jane as marrying another Charles (the cousin) and being the parent of a daughter Isabelle, which matches other information of Jane and Charles (the cousin). Was Mary Oakley Johnston the wife of Charles, the father of Jane? A later child was named Mary. No definate proof!
