About Campbell "Cam" Stewart
Campbell Stewart was born on 30 April 1896 in Canada. son of Daniel Campbell Stewart and his wife Abigail Ross of Vancouver, Canada, but originally with Scottish Roots. His arrival to America was prior to the filing of his Declaration of Intention for Naturalization to become an American citizen on 19 February 1934.
In about 1937, Stewart ran the grocery concession in the Rancho Pico Market in West Los Angeles. Running the deli concession in the same store at the time was deli industry veteran Lou Sugarman. [Source: Deli News Magazine, May 1966, Pg. 9]
In 1945, Campbell "Cam" Stewart assumed the position of Manager for Southern California Grocery Wholesale Cooperative Certified Grocers, based in Commerce, California. (now known as "Unified Grocers", Inc.). . The position was held previously by Clayton Whiteman.
Stewart served for 15 years as the General Manager before retiring from Certified Grocers in 1961. In the 15 years that Stewart served in that position, the company’s annual sales volume grew from $53 million to $300 million, member stores increased from 900 to 1,600 and employee strength swelled from 235 to more than 1,000. (Source: Certified Grocers 75th Anniversary Publication). Campbell Stewart was succeeded in the General Manager's position at Certified Grocers by J. Murray Yunker.
Campbell Stewart passed away on 17 April 1973 in Los Angeles County, California. His contributions to the wholesale grocery industry are many and his leadership was felt for many years.
