BIOGRAPHY (from Jesse Montgomery Seaver manuscript):

Calvin Seaver enlisted in the Revolutionary Army at age 17, served 2 or 3 enlistments, until the Army was disbanded in 1783. Served as a Captain for a considerable time. Was in the battles of Stillwater, King's Bridge, White Plains, Trenton, and surrender of Burgoyne. He emigrated to Norwich VT soon after close of the war. Held Captain's commission in State militia for many years. Town magistrate and held many town offices. United with Congregational church in 1809, until his death. Long remembered by his fellow townsmen as an upright Christian man.

MILITARY RECORDS:

The Revolutionary War service records for Calvin Seaver include Pension File W19332 and Bounty Land Warrant #2089-160-65 (Virgil D. White, "Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files"). Calvin served in the Continental and Massachusetts Lines. Other data summarized in the abstract included:

  • Soldier married Mary "Molly" Hovey 16 February 1786 at Norwich VT
  • Soldier applied 22 December 1818 at Thetford VT.
  • In 1820 soldier was aged 62 a res of Norwich VT with a wife aged 56 & 3 children; Otis 19, Elizabeth 22 & a grandchild Mary aged 4 years.
  • Soldier died 2 Oct 1840.
  • Widow applied 15 June 1843 at Norwich VT aged 79, and she applied there for the Bounty Land Warrant on 18 March 1855.
  • Soldier lived at Petersham MA at enlistment.
  • Widow died 4 July 1857.

Calvin Seaver of Petersham was a Private in Capt. Barnes's (Light Infantry) company, in Colonel Thomas Nixon's regiment. Continental Army pay accounts for service from 23 March 1777 to 31 December 1779, credited to the town of Petersham. He was also listed in Capt. Adam Wheeler's company, Colonel Nixon's (5th) regiment. He was also on the return of men who were in camp on or before 15 August 1777, and who had not been absent subsequently except on furlough, etc., dated Soldier's fortune, 15 February 1779 and certified at Camp near Peekskill. Also in Capt. Thomas Barnes's (Light Infantry) company, Col. Nixon's regiment, pay rolls for November and December, 1779. He was also in Capt. Abel Holden's (Light Infantry) company, Col. Nixon's regiment, Continental Army pay accounts for service from 1 January 1780 to 18 February 1780, and reported discharged 18 February 1780.

He is also on a descriptive list of men raised in Worcester County to serve in the Continental Army, agreeable to the resolve of 2 December 1780, as returned by Seth Washburn, Superintendent, in Capt. Lord's company, Col. Grout's regiment, age 22 years, stature 5 ft. 5 inc, complexion light, occupation farmer, engaged for the town of Petersham on 18 January 1781 for a 3 year term. He was promoted to Sergeant on 11 June 1783. ["Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War," Wright & Potter Printing Co., Boston, 1905, p.959]

In the 1790 United States Census, Calvin Sever was a head of household in Norwich, Windsor County, Vermont. The household included one free white male over age 16, two free white males under age 16, and two free white females (1790 United States Census, Norwich, Windsor County, Vermont, Page 062, FHL Microfilm 0,568,152).

In the 1800 United States Census, Calvin Sever was a head of household in Norwich, Windsor County, Vermont. The household included one free white male under age 10, two free white males aged 10 to 16, one free white male aged 26 to 45, three free white females under age 10, and one free white female aged 26 to 45 (1800 United States Census, Norwich, Windsor County, Vermont, Page 364, FHL Microfilm 0,218,689).

In the 1820 United States Census, Calvin Sever was a head of household residing in Norwich town, Windsor County, Vermont. The household included one free white male aged 16 to 26, one free white male over age 45, one free white female aged 16 to 26 and one free white female over age 45 (1820 United States Census, Windsor County, Vermont, Population Schedule, Norwich, Page 175, FHL Microfilm 0,281,249).
