Bond of Ebenezer Brooks and Samuel Brooks of Medford as administrators of Caleb Brooks late of Medford Yeoman Dece'd Intestate.
24 Aug 1696: Agreement between Hannah Brooks Widdow of Caleb Brooks of Medford Dec'd & the children of Caleb Brooks that Widdow Brooks to have third part of personal estate for ever, third part of income of real estate; Ebenezer Brooks' part; Sam'll Brooks' part; the part of Nathaniel Ball & Mary is wife; Sarah Brooks' part. Acknowledgment of agreement notes "refering to their Sister Rebecka Brookes who not being capable to Act for her self ... her two Brothers viz Ebenezer & Samuell Brooks have given Bond to take care of her and so take her Estate into their hands".

  5.   The birth of son Ebenezer in 1669/70 names the mother Anna, and the birth of son Samuel in 1672 names her Hanna. Clearly, he had a second wife, but no marriage record seems to have been found. Savage, 1:259, says Caleb Brooks m. (1) Susanna Atkinson, m. (2) "Hannah, sis. of the former w.". It is not clear what evidence this assumption of their relationship is based on, but given the editor's note in TAG, it seems unlikely. Probably it is a misinterpretation of some connection to the Atkinson family that may be sufficiently explained solely based on the first wife, but not knowing how can we tell? Savage cites Shattuck, not necessarily in regards to this issue, but this is not where the information comes from, as p. 365 identifies first wife as Susannah Atkinson, and second wife as Ann ---. The identification of Hannah as sister of Susannah is unquestioningly repeated by Cutter, Crane and others (though not Ezra Stearns), none giving evidence.
