Will of Sergt, Caleb Abell

"I, Caleb Abell of Norwich in the County of New London & Colony of Connecticut in New England being far advanced in years and apprehending my great change approching, Being also of Sound mind & perfect memory, do now make & ordain this my last Will and Testament viz on this 30 day of July Anno Dom 1728 to say as follows. I do Comply with ye Divine will and resign my Body to the Dust whence it was formed whenever God shall call me hence to be here no more & my Soul I do resign to God that gave it. And respecting such worldly Estate as God hath given me I do make the following Disposition.

Impr. As to my well beloved Wife Mary having already made provision for her Comfortable Maintenance after my decease, I do hereby Confirm that and moreover do give unto her the Bed and Bedstead Bolster & Pillows wc lies in the West Room together with one pair of sheets two Blankets & a Coverled and the Curtains wc belong to it; and also the use of the warming pan during her occasion for it.

Item. Respecting my Eldest Son Saml I have already by deeds of Gift given him that wc I have thot myself able to do and what I esteem as his proportion of my Estate. But as a token of my fatherly affection for him do also give him twenty shillings money.

Item. Respecting my son Caleb I have also done for him what I thot proper by Deeds of Gift & moreover do now as a token of my love Give him the sum of Twenty shillings.

Item. Respecting my son John I have also done for him what I thot proper by deeds of Gift & do also as token of my Love give him twenty shillings.

Item. Respecting the heirs of my son Theophilus deceased having before given him his full proportion of my estate do now give unto them as a token of my Love ye sum of Twenty shillings.

Item. Respecting my son Noah wt I have already given him by deeds of Gift I do now Confirm and moreover do give unto him a pair of Oxen with the Cart yoke & chains & tackling belonging thereto, and also the one half of a ten acre lot in the Sheepwalk to him & his heirs forever.

Item. Respecting my daughters Experience, Margaret, Johanna, Abigail, Hannah, I do give unto them equally an hundred acres of Land lying as Sutland in Windham to them & their heirs forever. The one half of my ten acre Lot in ye Sheepwalk I give unto my Daughter Hannah, I do give the Bed and bedding wc is in the East Room, a Brass kettle a brass skillet and also a warming pan at her Mothers decease, and for her extraordinary servitude I do give her one great puter platter and two smaller ones and six puter plates to her & heirs forever. The Rest of all my Moveables I do give unto all my Children equally.

My Land at the Cranberry Pond I do order to be sold to pay the Debts & leave the disposal of it wth my Executors for that end, and I do appoint My Sons Samuel & Noah Executors of my Last Will & Testament.

And I do pronounce this and no other as my Last Will and Testament.

Norwich September 16 A. D. 1731 The Reverand Mr. Benjamin Lord Mr. William Hide and Mrs. Anne Hide all appeared and made oath that they saw Mr. Caleb Abel Deceased sign and seal this instrument on the other side of this paper and declare it to be his last Will and Testament and at the Doing hereof he was of sound mind & memory in their judgment and that they all set two their hands as witnesses in the presence of the Testator before me.

    "7. Sergt. Caleb Abell, born 1646 probably in Rehoboth, Mass.; died August 7, 1731 in his 85tb yr. (inscription on gravestone in Norwich, Conn.); … Sergt. Caleb Abell is first mentioned in the Colonial records at Dedham in 1665, petitioned for Freeman in Dedham, May 3, 1665; in 1668 moved to Norwich, Conn. … On December 18, 1694 Caleb was appointed to keep his house as 'an ordinari or of entertayment' for the year, or until another be chosen. … Caleb joined the first church of Norwich before 1701. He was Sergeant of the Norwich Train Band in 1701 and Selectman in 1682, Constable in 1684 and 1706 and Townsman in 1689."
