Waters, Bevel, Hartford. Invt. £1483-16-00 (realty). Taken 13 March, 1729, by Thomas Hosmer, Samuel Webster and John Whiting. Will dated 1st February, 1720-1.

I, Bevel Waters of Hartford, do make and ordain this my last will and testament: I give to my eldest daughter, Sarah Benton, wife of Joseph Benton, £100 in money. I give to my 2nd daughter, Mary Seymour, wife of Thomas Seymour, £100 in money. I give to my 3rd daughter, Hannah Merrells, wife of Willterton Merrells, £100 in money. I give to my grandson Joseph Waters, besides what I have already given him, 5 acres of meadow land more or less, lying and being in Hartford South Meadow, bounded on the land belonging to heirs of Capt. Joseph Whiting decd., west, on land sometime belonging to Capt. Watts decd, north, on land of the heirs of Jno. Merrells decd, south, on lands of the heirs of Thomas Bunce decd., to be to him the sd. Joseph Waters, his heirs and assigns forever, he or they always rendering and paying the rate arising from sd. land towards the support of the ministry to the maintenance of the minister of the South Church in Hartford, of which Church the Reverd. Mr. Thomas Buckingham is at present pastor. I give and bequeath to my grandson Samuel Waters all the rest of my houseing and lands, wheresoever lying or being, to be to him the sd. Samuel Waters and the eldest male heir of his body lawfully begotten, and so to divolve to the eldest male heir (lawfully begotten) in a right line, descending from sd. Samuel Waters from generation to generation forever. And for want of such male heir I then give and bequeath all those houseing and lands now bequeathed to my sd. grandson Samuel as followeth: viz., to the right lawfull heir descending to my son Thomas Waters decd., 2 shares or a double portion, and the remainder to be divided equally in proportion to my three daughters, Sarah, Mary and Hannah, to be to them and their heirs forever; always provided that the rate arising from sd. land for the support of the ministry shall be paid to the maintenance of ye minister of the South Church in Hartford, of which church the Reverend Mr. Thomas Buckingham is now pastor. My will is that the legacies given my three daughters shall be paid by my executors out of my moveable estate, reserving the long table, two other tables, wainscut foarm, leather chair, iron back and best featherbed and furniture to remain in the house for my grandson Samuel Waters. And what may be needfull to repair the buildings at my decease also to be reserved in moveable estate; and if there be wanting of sd. moveable estate (reserving what is before mentioned for my grandson Samuel and repairing the buildings) to paying sd. three daughters their legacies and my just debts, then sd. Legacies shall be made up in meadow land which lies in Wethersfield (belonging to me) to the value to my sd. daughters at £12 as money pr. acre. My will is, also, and I do desire, that my executor will take care, after my decease, that the buildings be kept in good repair until my grandson Samuel Waters shall arrive to the age of 21 years, and for that end to reserve so much loose estate as will answer the design. My will is, likewise, that when the legacies to my daughters and my just debts are paid, and things before mentioned to be reserved in the house are so reserved, and so much money or loose estate left in my executor's hands as will repair the buildings, that if there shall be any moveable estate left (always provided my executors be well paid), I give sd. moveable estate so remaining to the three daughters of my son Thomas Waters, equally to be divided between them, and their heirs and assigns forever. And I do hereby appoint Mr. Nathaniel Stanly and John Skinner, both of Hartford, to be executors, and my grandson Samuel Waters also as executor with them.

This codicil hereafter should have been entered at the end of the will, but through mistake was not, but is here recorded: Memorandum: Upon further consideration concerning the devises made in my foregoing will, I see cause to add this codicil as follows: That is to say, I give and bequeath 1 piece or percell of land more to my grandson Joseph Waters, son to Tho. deceased, lying and being in Hartford aforesd., containing 4 acres, joining to land belonging to Jonathan Bigelow at the lower end of the South Meadow, to be to him and his heirs forever. Also, that in case my grandson Samuel Waters die before he arrive to the age of 21 years, then my will is that the land and other estate before given to him shall descend and be 2-3 thereof to the children of my son Thomas decd., to them and their heirs forever, and the other 1-3 of sd. land and other estate to be divided equally amongst my three daughters, to be to them and their heirs forever. Also, my will is, that if any part of the legacies given to my daughters, that is to say, any part of the £100 I have given them before in this my will, shall be paid in meadow land in Wethersfield, that it shall be valued at the rate of £20 per acre.

    Date 30 April, 1722.

  4. Age at death (97) is probably exaggerated. Based on his dates of apprenticeship and freemanship, and the dates of his children's marriages, Barbour's (estimated?) date of 1648 (source unknown) seems reasonable.
