[edit] About Bernie BrenerBernard J. "Bernie" Brener was born 9 July 1912 in Los Angeles County, California, son of Harry Brener (b. 1879 in Russia) and his wife Sarah Alter (b. abt. 1883 in Austria), both european immigrants that came to America just after the turn of the century. Bernie enlisted in the United States Army on 16 March 1943 in Los Angeles, California after completing three years of college. His occupation listed in the enlistment records was a retail manager. Bernie grew up in the deli industry. His father, Harry Brener, opened the first deli in Los Angeles at Third and Main Streets in front of Carl Graf's sausage factory. Bernie worked for his father after school and during summer vacations and later worked in other markets around town.Bernie Brenner started his career working for Vons Grocery Company from 1936 to 1948. Afterwards, he worked under Deli Industry legend Harry Schneider for two years at Boys Markets before joining upstart upscale supermarket Gelson's Market as its Deli Buyer ni 1950, which became over the years, one of the premier upscale supermarket chains in the country. Bernie added new products and innovations to the deli category during his tenure at Gelson's which proved to be successful in building sales, profits and were popular with Gelson's clientele'. Brener retired from Gelson's in 1979 after 29 years of service. During his career, Bernie was very active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. Brener was a member of the Deli Council at its inception in 1960, served on the Deli Council's Board of Directors, was the 3rd Vice President in 1972 and was first recognized by the Deli Council in October 1964, when he received its "Big Cheese" Award. Bernie continued to be an active supporter of the DDBC throughout the years and in recognition of that on-going leadership and support became the 17th member to receive the DDBC's "Hall of Fame" Award for 1994. Bernie Brenner, who lived in the San Fernando Valley for many years, passed away on 10 December 2003 in Vista, San Diego County, California, and was survived by his wife Constance "Connie" [nee Talpey], who passed away in 2009. He has been remembered by his co-workers and friends in the food industry for his out-going personality, strong work ethic and passion for life. Image Gallery
