[edit] About Harry SchneiderHarold W. "Harry" Schneider was born 22 February 1913 in Livingston, Madison County, Illinois, the son of Samuel Nathan Schneider, Jr. and his wife Rebecka "Bella" Finer, both Russian Jewish immigrants that migrated to America by 1900. Prior to 1930, the family had re-located to Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, where Harry was listed in the U.S. Census, working as a clerk in a delicatessan. Harry started his supermarket career at age 19, working for Safeway in Lincoln, Nebraska, his hometown. He worked his way up to Store Manager. In the 1940 U.S. Census, Harry Schneider [age 27] was listed as a Manager in a Retail Grocery Store, with wife Sarah [age 26] and son Harvey, then 2 years old. Also listed in the household was a Helen Zumple, their 21-year old maid. When Harold came to Southern California, he spent most of his professional life working for supermarket chains in Southern California, specialzing in the deli side of the business. He spent time working for Food Giant [for 6 years], Food Fair Markets, Boys Markets [for 12 years], and Foods Co., all growing multi-store chains during the 1960's - 1980's. At Foods Co., Schneider served as its Deli Director for several years.Harry Schneider provided early leadership with a local trade association, the Southern California Deli Council (now known as the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC)), and served as its fourth President in 1963, an organization which still exists in 2014. Harry was present in the early days of the Deli Council when the first meetings were held at Syd Fischer's house until the group was large enough to be held in a small dining room at the Roger Young Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles. Harry was honored by the Deli Council in February 1964 with its first "Big Cheese" Award for his service to the Council, while working at Foods Co. Markets, and has the distinction of being the first person to receive the Deli Council's "Hall of Fame" award in 1983. He was a popular retailer that was highly regarded and respected for his industry knowledge and professionalism. Harry Schneider passed away on 18 September 2003 in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California. His contributions to the Southern California food industry will always be remembered and highly appreciated. Image Gallery
