Birth: 7 Dec 1815, Neu Osterwick, Chortitza, South Russia (citing Reinländer Gemeinde Buch, 1880-1903, page 381-3)
    Baptism: 1834, Russia
Death: 24 Feb 1895, Rural Municipality of Stanley, Manitoba
'Notes:  His birth date is given as 7 Dec 1816 in the Reinlaender Gemeinde Buch on p. 381-3 and in the 1880 Mennonite Census of the W. Reserve on p. 177. However, other records give his birth date as 7 Dec 1815 and his ages as given in the Sardinian ship list in 1876, the 1891 Federal Census, and on his death certificate support a 7 Dec 1815 birth date. He appears to be the "Herman", age 1, listed in his father's family in the Oct 1816 Census.'

The argument for placing his birth date in 1815 is probably right, but it should be noted that his age on the immigration record (60) and the 1891 census (75) could easily be the result of rounding, as was not uncommon (at least for census records) as individuals got older. His age in the 1881 census (64) supports Dec 1816.

A better argument might be based on how well the date fits into his family. If he was born Dec 1815 (and his siblings' birth dates are correct), he was born 27 months after Jacob and 27 months before Cornelius. If he was born Dec 1816, there was presumably also a Herman born in 1815 (say, May 1815) who was listed in the Oct 1816 census (age 1). That would make siblings born about 20 months apart (Jacob to Herman), then about 19 months apart (Herman to Benjamin) and then 15 months apart (Benjamin to Cornelius) - not impossible, but less likely, especially for children later in the family.

Both his baptism and marriage years support being born in Dec 1815 rather than Dec 1816.

The editors compared Quebec Passenger Lists to Hamburg, Germany Passenger Lists, and where the information was different, included the Hamburg information in square brackets [ ]. R381-3 refers to Reinlaender Gemeinde Buch, page 381-3. Hoffnungsfeld/WR refers to a village in the Mennonite West Reserve of Manitoba, Canada.
