Facts and Events
Said to have come from Northern Ireland. Sterett Genealogy, by T. Woods Sterett, 1930. Twelve families came from Scotland and Ireland to American between 1694 and 1820. They seem fo have come independently of each other since they came at different times and to different places. They settled innearly all eastern states from Ontario to Georgia, but there seems to be more of them in PA. W. B. Marye of Baltimore, MD: "The name Sterett is not indigenous to Ireland but to Scotland. The earliest record I have found of them was in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the 1490's" [edit] Information on Benjamin SterrettBenjamin Sterrett was born Abt. 1670 in Scotland, and died March 1738/39 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married *Isabelle on Abt. 1700 in Scotland. Notes for *Benjamin Sterrett: Family tradition is that Benjamin and Isabelle came to the U.S. sometime around 1730 from Ireland (having lived there after fleeing Scotland to evade those opposed to their religious beliefs. They settled in Chester Co., Pennsylvania near Swatara Creek. Died intestate, in the county of Lancaster, Province of Pennsylvania, in 1739. Letters of administration were granted March 17, 1739, to his widow Isabelle, John Sterrett and Andrew Mayes, sureties. No children mentioned.
