BENJAMIN is NOT related to the DANIEL LOWER (1792-1876) Family of Urbana, Indiana, and Wabash, Indiana. Benjamin is descended from Hans Lauer (circa 1601) of Hirstein, in the Saarland. The Hirstein Lowers are the largest group in the USA bearing the same surname (either spelling). Benjamin is in the same line of descent from Hans Lauer, as Dorothy Lower, formerly the head of the Genealogy Department at the ACPL, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which is the second largest genealogy library in the USA. Dorothy also has a WeRelate.org Page. There are other Lower Families in Wabash County, which are not related to these Hirstein Lowers, nor to Daniel Lower's family. However, Benjamin is buried in the large center section in the western part of Falls Cemetery, where a number of descendants of Daniel Lower (1792-1876) are buried - especially Adam Lower (1851-1914).

Benjamin migrated to Wabash County in the autumn of 1848, which might also be the exact same year that Daniel Lower migrated to the Urbana area from Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Tuscarawas County, Ohio is adjacent to Coshocton County! Dorothy Lower's ancestors were also from Tuscarawas County!

Benjamin was named in his father's Will, which was probated in 1856 in Coshocton County, Ohio

Benjamin enlisted in the Civil War at Wabash, Indiana. He fought in many battles and was wounded. He rose to the rank of sergeant. He fought in the famous battle of Vicksburg. He fought in all the battles of the Red River Expedition. He was a member of the GAR, Post #6. He received a pension for "dis. lungs & c." on January 1, 1883. The amount was $18.

Jack (whose mother has a WeRelate.org Page) states in his book that BENJAMIN was born in 1833, and his middle initial was "B.".

  3. 3.0 3.1 Wabash City Directory.

The directory gives his name as "B F", followed by the word "aviary". Normally, this space would be where the occupation of the resident would be found. An "aviary" is a large bird cage, used for a large number of birds. It would seem this was a business of Benjamin? In this same directory were 7 others with the Lower surname, none of them in Benjamin's line.

  5. In the 1860 Federal Census, the next entry following Benjamin, is an entry for Susanna (LOWER) Smith. This family has an interesting story, and a WeRelate.org Page will be created for them.
  6. "A Leaf of Voices" was a book about Civil War soldiers, who wrote letters back to the "Wabash Plain Dealer" newspaper; detailing experiences on the battlefields.
