Facts and Events
Aura Bendle's young life had tragedy, sadness, and upheaval. By the age of 5, in 1890, her mother had died, she and her twin sister, May, were living in a Cleveland, Ohio, Orphanage, and she was being taken away from there. A couple from Charlotte, Chautauqua County, New York, Cyrus and Katie Wilson, had traveled to Cleveland to find two healthy girls to adopt from an orphanage. Cyrus and Katie wanted two healthy, strong girls so they choose Aura and another little girl named May, but left Aura's twin behind. Cyrus and Katie Wilson gave Aura the surname Wilson. They sent the girls to school, taught them all of the farm chores like hand milking the cows, cleaning the barn stalls, and how to work. Katie taught them all of the home arts like sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, cooking, and baking. Aura told her children and grandchildren that she was always thankful to Cyrus and Katie as they gave her a family life and brought her up to be a nice person. To Aura's children, Cyrus and Katie were Grandpa and Grandma. Aura had an older sister, Florence, and brother, Henry, in addition to May in her birth family. They found each other in adult hood and kept in contact. In my search for Aura's birth parents, I found the 1880 Federal census for Cardington, Morrow,Ohio, that listed a Bendle family. Robert Bendle, age 29, his wife, May, age 20, and their daughter, Florence, age 7 months. The family story was that Aura's mother died when she was very young but I've not found proof yet. Robert Bendle death is listed in the Cardington Newspaper Index. He died of heart disease 16 Nov 1895. One explanation is that Robert either sent the children to Cleveland, or traveled there himself with them, after his wife died. There is some relation in Cleveland in later census records. Decades after Aura's death, one of Aura's grandsons found an old brochure from the 'Cleveland Protestant Orphan Asylum' in her belongings. It may be the orphanage that Aura and May had been in. She had kept the brochure for some reason and it seems reasonable that it held great significance to her because that is where she lived for at least a few months or years.--Kath newc 17:48, 19 January 2010 (EST) Image Gallery
