Arno Dietrich Blumhagen, the son of Henry and Anna nee Schutte Blumhagen, was born on May 6, 1908, at Castalia, Iowa. He was baptized into the Christian faith on July 22, 1908, at Postville, and was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, on Sept. 11, 1921, by Pastor E. Schmidt. He attended the rural schools near Castalia.

On Nov. 27, 1930, he was united in marriage with Hazel Lestina at the Lutheran parsonage at Monona, Pastor Daugs officiating. After their marriage, they farmed for seven years near Castalia and then moved to the Monona community, farming east of Monona for 7 years and then just south of Monona for another 7 years. Ronald, who now operates this last farm, was the first child born to this marriage. Twin daughters, Joanne, who is now Mrs. Raymond Suckow of Postville, and Joanita, who is Mrs. Daniel Schweikert of Monona, complete the family. There are also 12 grandchildren.

In 1952, after Mr. Blumhagen had undergone serious back surgery, he moved into Monona from the farm. He operated a service station and drove a school bus for 14 years. He had also served as a director of the Commission Co. in Monona. He served his church on the Church Council, as an usher, and as treasurer of the Brotherhood.

Several months ago, he became seriously ill, was taken to the hospital at Postville and then to Rochester, and passed away at Postville on Jan. 26 at the age of 58 years, 8 months & 20 days.

Surviving besides his wife & children are four brothers, Carl of Postville, and Lloyd, Henry & Alvin, all of Castalia; also three sisters, Mrs. William (Minnie) Bugenhagen Jr. of Luana, Mrs. Harold (Elsie) Meyer of Castalia, and Elda, also of Castalia.
