Hazel Blumhagen

Hazel Alberta Augusta Blumhagen, daughter of Frank E. and Martha (Schroeder) Lestina, was born October 23, 1911, in Giard Township. She was baptized November 30, 1911 and confirmed August 23, 1925.

Hazel was united in marriage to Arno Blumhagen on November 27, 1930 at the church parsonage. After their marriage they lived 4 to 5 years at Castalia. They then lived on a farm near Beulah Falls and also southeast of Monona. They moved to Monona in 1951.

Hazel worked at the Monona Dry Goods for over 25 years. Hazel always attended her church circle and Doing Days. She loved her family and was always making something for them.

Hazel died Sunday, September 6, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Home, Postville, where she had been a resident since 1995.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Arno who died January 26, 1967; a son, Ronald, who died in September 1995; a daughter, Joanna Suckow, who died in November 1983; a brother, Walter Lestina, and a sister, Alice Kottman.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Joanita and Dan Schweikert of Monona; 12 grandchildren, Peggy White, Jon Blumhagen, Susan Mohs, Vicki Schroeder, Jyl Lee, Patrica Leeman, Tobin Schweikert, William Suckow, Cresa Miller, Michael Suckow, Jenny Gilbertson, and Penny Vagts; 29 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great twin granddaughters, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday September 9, 1998, 10 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Pastors Bill and Kristine Schroeder officiated. Organist was Mrs. Connie Halverson and soloist was Jon Blumhagen. Pallbearers were her grandchildren.

Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of services.
