Ann Leggatt was baptised on 25th February 1821 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of William and Sarah Leggatt. Her father was a labourer and the family lived at Mill, a hamlet on the edge of Pagham Harbour. The 1841 census finds Ann living with her father (her mother presumably having died) at Almodington in Sidlesham parish.
In 1843, aged 22, Ann married a man called Charles Grant, who was also from Sidlesham. The following year they had a daughter, Fanny, baptised at Sidlesham, when they were described as living at Easton, a lane in Sidlesham parish, and Charles's occupation was given as being a sailor.
It would seem that Charles went to sea for a considerable time and effectively abandoned Ann. In 1847 she had a daughter named Sarah baptised at Sidlesham, but the parish record pointedly does not name Charles as the baby's father. She then appears to have moved to the major port of Portsmouth, a few miles to the west of Sidlesham, where she had another child, James, in about 1855.
In 1858, Ann married again, with her second husband being a beer seller and brewery labourer named Henry Wyatt. As it happens, Charles Grant was still alive (he appears to have been in Baghdad in about 1858) but if Ann had not heard from him in over seven years she would have been allowed to deem him legally dead and thus been free to remarry.
The 1861 and 1871 censuses both find Ann and Henry living in Portsmouth. They appear to have had three children together: Edward, Martha and William. They have yet to be researched after 1871.
