In the 18 Jul 1870 US census, with the last name spelled Steiger, Andrew, his wife, Josephine and four children were living in Concord Township, Dubuque County, Iowa with a post office address of Dubuque, Iowa and owned real estate valued at $1,200.00 and a personal estate of $900.00. By 1880, with the last name spelled Stager, Andrew and Josephine were the parents of six children and were still living on a farm in Concord Township. The obituary of Andrew Stager (note the spelling of the last name) which appeared in the Dyersville, Iowa Commercial on Wednesday, 22 Oct 1919 stated: The funeral of Andrew Stager, (son of the late Johann Georg and Catherine Dirmayr Steger) who died at Holy Cross, was held Saturday morning from the Catholic church in Holy Cross, where a solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Clark of Rickardsville, Father Hochmeyer of Buena Vista, and Father McCaffrey of Holy Cross. Mr. Stager was born in Bavaria, Germany, seventy-nine years ago and came to this country at the age of seven years. He is survived by four sons, Henry and William of Golva, N. Dak., Frank of Holy Cross, Martin of Dubuque and four daughters, (however only three names are listed) Lizzie of Golva, Mrs. M. Schmitz, of Holy Cross and Mrs. Anton Benda of North Buena Vista, and eleven grandchildren. References
