    1903.

The death of Almira Hemenway occurred at one o'clock Saturday morning. In the 79th year of her age. Her maiden name was Porter. In 1849 she was married to Joseph Hemenway. To their union was born one daughter who was married in 1875 to Mr. D.J.C. Arnold, and who died in 1886. Her husband died in 1895. Mrs. Hemenway was a woman of more than ordinary intellectual power. In her girlhood days, after completing the course in the country school, she studied at Oberlin, after which she taught a number of country schools around New London. When past 60 years of age she began the studies in the Chautauqua reading circle and graduated in the class of '91, and afterward continued the readings of the course, continuing until only a few weeks before her death. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church when a young woman and remained a faithful member all her life. Her funeral was held at her home on Ashland street, Monday morning, and her body was buried beside that of her husband in Grove Street Cemetery.
