    Alfred born Aug. 1, 1822; died in Council Grove, Kansas Dec. 27, 1899. He married Clarissa Bassett. He attended Oberlin College for two years and was a school teacher for many years. In 1853 he moved to Beloit, Wisconsin and then later in 1869 he moved to a farm six miles west of Council Grove, Kansas. He had seven children and some of his descendants still live there on the old Porter farm. The old Santa Fe trail runs through the farm.
