Alfred Thomas Mitchell was born in 1889 in Warwick, son of Harriet Charlotte Mitchell, formerly Bastock, and her husband Alfred Mitchell, a labourer. He was the couple's third son. Some time between Alfred's birth in 1889 and the 1891 census the family left Warwick and moved ten miles north to Coventry. In Coventry, the 1891 census finds Alfred living with his parents and two older brothers at 3 Court 2 House Sherbourne Street. Just after the 1891 census his parents had another son, Henry Arthur, but he died as a baby. In 1893 they had another son, Frederick.

Some time between 1893 and 1899 something happened to Alfred's father, leaving him in Coventry Union Workhouse, apparently disabled and unable to look after himself or his family. There must have been a very real danger of the whole family having to enter the workhouse. Alfred's mother started a relationship with a man named Edward Scholes Feary, having six children with him between 1899 and 1904, although at least three of those died as babies. The family briefly moved to Rugby around 1899, but returned to Coventry by 1900. The 1901 census finds Alfred living with his mother, Edward Feary and his brothers at 2 Court 11 House, Thomas Street - a small courtyard property with two rooms to the south-west of the city centre.

In October 1909, Alfred's mother died aged 43. A couple of months later his father Alfred died in Coventry Union Workhouse, aged 54. Alfred therefore lost both his parents at the age of 20. The 1911 census finds Alfred still living with Edward Feary and his brothers Samuel and Frederick. They appear to have moved across the road from 2 Court 11 House, to 11 Court 2 House - a confusing reversal of the numbers. Court 11 was almost directly opposite Court 2. At the time of the 1911 census, Alfred was working in a motor factory on the milling machines.

Alfred did not marry until 1929, when he was 40. He wife was Lavina Barnwell, known as Dolly, who was 33 and also from Coventry. They do not appear to have had any children.

Alfred died in 1955, aged 66. They had been married for 25 years. Dolly outlived him by over 40 years and died aged 100.
