Notes on Foster Daughter

Myrtle "Helen" Haines "Gates" was the youngest child and only daughter of Julian Haines and his wife, Lottie Troup. Lottie left her husband and two sons shortly after Helen was born (she died, at the age of 24, in 1912).

Baby Helen was raised by Alfred Gross Gates and his wife, Clara B. Helen used the surname of "Gates" and she was listed as a "daughter" in the 1920 census.

In the Ohio County Marriage Records, Helen, 19, not previously married, listed her name as 'HELEN MCALLISTER (GATES)" and listed her foster parents as Gross Gates and Clara Stevens (she did not list her biological parents).

Julian Haines' granddaughter, Patricia Haines Reichelderfer, told RC that Julian was unwilling to sign the papers that would have allowed Gross and Clara to legally adopt Helen and that this was the cause of difficulty and hard feelings by Helen. RC's MIL, Helen Haines Carlisle, was named in honor of her aunt Helen Haines DeVoe.
