Personal History

Alford (sometimes Alfred) Overton, (fifth) son of George Overton of Bardney, wood dealer[2] or labourer[1], by Emma[1] Hall,[2] was born on 7 May 1865 at Bardney, Lincolnshire, England; the birth (of “Alfred”) was registered in the district of Lincoln by his mother on 11 June.[2] (The death certificate of Alford Overton states that he was born on 22 August 1864,[3] and in the U.S. census of 1900 it was recorded that he was born “Aug 1864”.[8] It is possible that the date given at the registration of birth was not the actual date of birth.) Alford was baptized on 4 June 1865 in the parish of Bardney.[1]

In the U.K. census of 1871, the family was residing on Ferry Road in the civil parish of Bardney.[11]

By 26 October 1871, Alford arrived at the Port of New York on the S.S. Wisconsin with his mother, Emma Overton, and five siblings. The ship had originated in Liverpool and made a stop in Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland.[4]
