About Alexander Doran

Alexander Doran took up land at the head of Cane Brake Springs, Iron Mountain, in Washington Co.,VA, 1774. He served as Ensign at King's Mountain and as Major in the War of 1812. About 1800 he removed from Abingdon to Tennessee, the part now included in Johnson Co. He helped to establish Duffield Academy, said to be the first educational institution in that section of Tennessee. [Source: Bill Reisor, long-time Doran researcher].

The academy incorporated for Carter County under the act of 1806 was denominated Duffield Academy, and George Duffield, Nathaniel Taylor, George Williams, Alexander Doran, John Greer, Andrew Taylor, Abraham Henry and Reuben Thornto n were appointed trustees of the institution. Source: TNGenWeb.com
