Person: Hugh Cowan (4)
Cowan's Gap Subgroup
Pequea Creek Cowans
Roaring Springs Cowans

Summary

This group includes descendants of Person:Hugh Cowan (4) who immigrated to PA about 1700, perhaps as an adult, perhaps as a child. He settled on Octoraro Creek in Chester County about 40 miles outside of Philadelphia. Fleming included him in his "Four Brothers Group". The other three brothers of Flemings group settled immediately to the west of the Octoraro on Pequea Creek. While we have only limited YDNA data for Hugh's line, we have ample YDNA data for the line of the Pequea Creek Cowan's. Based on this YDNA data, the Pequea Creek Cowans do not share a relatively recent common ancestor with Hugh Cowan of Octoraro. A single YDNA kit is available for a person believed to descend from Hugh. That kit matches the Cowan's Gap Subgroup. From this, and other indirect evidence it is inferred that Hugh (4) shares a common relatively recent common ancestor with the Cowan's Gap line. That common ancestor is probably not Hugh himself, as the Cowan's Gap Cowans do not seem to correspond directly with Hugh's children. Hugh's known grandchildren began being born about 1770, at which time the Cowan's Gap Cowans can be easily shown to have been adults. Thus, if Hugh is indeed related to the Cowan's Gap line, we have missing early immigrant ancestors (possibly Hugh's brothers) who settled in America about 1700.
