Family talk:David Lynn and Unknown Spouse (1)

Lynn family of "Loch Lynne" [25 June 2017]

I have seen many places where American descendants of the Lynn family claim that their ancestor was "Laird of Loch Lynne". I don't know where this information originated but it is in error.

There is not and there could never be a Laird of Loch Lynne in Scotland. Laird means Lord and Loch means lake. Lairds were chiefs or heads of something such as lands, estates, families, clans, etc. In the case of a laird of a geographical place, these were linked to landed property, which may or may not include a lake. There is no such thing as a Lord of a lake. A lake was not considered to be landed property, only a part of one.--Karex 23:18, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
