'Apley, Hagurcote and Withyford, Shropshire, were the ancestral Charlton lands of Thomas Charlton of Apley, ... The fact that they passed to his son Robert shows that Robert was eldest son of Thomas Charlton of Apley. Therefore, Robert's mother was evidently not Elizabeth Fraunceys, daughter of Sir Adam Fraunceys, for her sole heir was Thomas Charlton of Eddmeton, Middlesex, her son, evidently born by 1417 (Fine Rolls, May 14, 1417).

'In Staffordshire Historical Collections, 1894 and 1895, it is shown by entries from the Plea Rolls for 1401 that Sir Robert Fraunceys had custody of Thomas Charlton, alias Knightley, heir of Apley, Salop, during the minority of said Thomas. ...

'The pedigree of Francis of Foremark, Derbyshire ... shows that Sir Robert Fraunceys, living in 1412, had a daughter Cicely ... It is patent that she married Sir Robert's ward, Thomas Charlton, alias Knightley, and that their son, Robert Charlton of Apley, was named for his maternal grandsire, Sir Robert Fraunceys of Foremark and Allestree, Derbyshire, and Wyllen, Bucks.'
