Family narrative

In the 1850 census, John and Emily lived with their toddler son, Charles, and their infant daughter, Caroline and John was engaged in farming in Boone County, Kentucky. Aug 1850 would have been 3 years and a couple of months after John and Emily's marriage in Jun 1847.

The 1850 census, collected in Boone County, Kentucky in August 1850, is not as clear cut associated with this family as later ones, but I believe it is associated. The ages of husband and wife as 27 and 21 are consistent in that a) John's birthday was still a month away, meaning he would have been 27, turning 28 in September and b) Emily's birthday was in only a couple of days, meaning she would be turning 21 within the month and would likely have been recorded as being 21. The birthplaces of husband and wife are consistent with other info. "E F" is consistent with "Emily Francis". As for the children, listed as "C H" and "E C", if initials had been requested by the interviewer, "C A" could have been misinterpreted as "C H"; "Caroline" is more problematic, but it might be that she has an additional name not yet identified. The ages of the children were listed as 2 and 7/12, respectively; Charles was born in March 1848, meaning he would have turned 2 before the survey, while Caroline - we don't yet have an exact date of birth, but it is considered to be 1849, so 7/12 is consistent.
One hypothesis that would resolve the "E C" issue would be that "Esther" and "Caroline" are the same people. This would be consistent with "E C" in 1850, "Caroline" in 1860 and "Esther C" in 1870. If this were true, Esther's birth in 24 Dec 1849 would be consistent with an age of 7/12 in 6 Aug 1850 - the difference between birth and survey is 7 months and 13 days.

In the 1860 census, John and Emily lived with two sons (Charles and Valentine) and three daughters (Caroline, Mary C and Laney), all 12 years old or younger. Yockey's household was visited right after a visit to Isham Riley's household, and right before a visit to William Riley's household. John was noted to be a farmer with real estate amounting to $1,000 and personal wealth of $300.

In the 1870 census, the family had not moved and had grown to two parents and eight children. Children born in the past ten years were George, Alice, Margaret and Lorenzo aka Jasper. Three of the kids, Laney, Valentine and George, were in school. John was still farming, and the 50 year old father and 41 year old mother had four children in the house less then 10 years old, one of them an infant. One of the children, the eldest Charles, had moved out of the house, married and had an infant son --- and was the next enumerated family after John and Emily in the census.

Reviewing the entire image set for Center Township in the 1870 census, John was one of only six men and one women who were foreign born in the area. There were three other Germanic people, a couple (Mood) from Prussia and a Nellinger from Germany; there was also a Calland from Scotland, and a Ray and Crawford from Ireland.

In the 1880 census, all but the youngest three children had left the home, the family farm - Alice, Margaret and Lorenzo (Jasper). All of them were in school, and Jasper was, presumably, helping on the family farm. Alice was 17, and in about two years she would be wed.

By the time of the 1880 census, Center Township had been split into two Enumeration Districts, suggesting substantial population growth. John and Emily lived in Enumeration District 304. Looking again at foreign born people in the area, the Ray from Ireland remained, of course John from Bavaria, and a woman from Ireland had married into a Ricketts family. Looking at Enumeration District 305, Nellinger and the Mood couple from Germany remained, and a German woman had married into a Tilley family. This summarizes as seven foreign born people, four men and three women.

In the 1900 census, John and Emily lived alone, next door to their youngest child, Jasper, and his family. The record shows their surname misspelled as "Yocky" and "Jno M" as John's name, and "Emily F" as Emily's name. Their birth month and year are consistent with other records, showing them as 77 and 70 years old, respectively, having been married for 53 years. The record indicates that Emily had had 9 children, 8 of whom were still living, which is not consistent with info in this record - which would show as 13 children; as death dates haven't been found for all, one is known to have died before 1900. Birth places of John and Emily are consistent; both of John's parents are noted as having been born in Germany, and both of Emily's in Kentucky. The record shows John as having immigrated to the US in 1840, having been in the country for 60 years, and the naturalization field shows "na" - with no indicator of the meaning of the code. The record shows John's occupation as 'Farmer'. Though it shows that John can read, write and speak English, it shows that Emily apparent could neither read nor write. Finally, it shows that John owned the home, free and clear, and that it was on a farm.

The couple were living alone at this time and had been married for 53 years.

Census indicated that Emily had 9 children, 8 of whom remained living at this time; however, aggregate of info has led to 12 children in this record, at least 3 of whom had died by Jun 1900. Two children (note) were not included in the 1860 census, which would bring total to 10.
