  2. The marriage record has not been found. There is some question about the identification of John Walley. Based on Elizabeth Alden's birth in 1665, a marriage any time after 1683 would not be unusual. Looking through Source:Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States. Births, Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths, 1630-1699 (A Report of the Record Commissioners), there is a steady stream of births to John & Elizabeth Walley starting when John Walley m. 1661 Elizabeth Wing, so it is difficult to pinpoint when John Walley & Elizabeth Alden started having children. Source:Torrey, Clarence Almon. New England Marriages Prior to 1700, p. 776, cites the 1693 birth of daughter Elizabeth. But Source:Roberts, Oliver Ayer. History of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, p. 1:371, says Abiel Walley was the son of John Walley and Elizabeth Alden, and he was born in 1686. Further there is a 1688 birth of John Walley that follows the 1687 birth of a William, both births recorded to John & Elizabeth Walley. These births are only 7 months apart, too close to be the same family. Since the other John & Elizabeth Walley had a son named John born in 1662 (possibly the husband of Elizabeth Alden?), this 1688 son John appears to belong to John Walley and Elizabeth Alden. So Torrey appears to have missed at least two children in estimating their marriage. There is a 1684 birth of daughter Sarah which is hard to place, meaning the above analysis may not even go far enough?
