Bud Newquist thinks that Xavier Gareau introduced John and Jenny , Xavier had a grocery store near the north side behind Lincoln park ). John would not go into Chicago proper, Jenny did at times. Walter & Mae and my dad did take John and Jenny to Xavier's home one Sunday for a meal. For John to do this shows me he considered this man his friend.

Of interest to me, Mr. Steger and John Newquist arrived in Chicago the same year,1871. Their background was similiar. Schooling usually ended by the age of 12. One was sent for further training as a tradesmen and then served an apprenticeship that ended by the time the youth was about 16 or 17. If there were brothers close to the same age , they were sent together to Americ This seems to be the case with both men. I imagine we will eventually find they knew each other for many years, perhaps 40 or more. Mr. Steger became very sucessfull by remembering an appreciating the craftsmen in all that he produced, and he appears to have used John many times. By 1885 Mr. Steger was constructing his own Chicago store. His final stage of mass production took place during the time John moved to Steger in 1902. My Dad tells the story that Jenny would not move until she had a house similiar to what she had on Michigan ave. (according to my dad its location was the old Stevens hotel site which presently is occupied by the Conrad Hilton). Mr. Stegers house still stands in Steger, it seems quite impressive ( some investigation maybe ).

About the 50th anniversary my dad had this to say, Joseph Mclean was related to Jenny, Gladys Gleason was a cousin of Mae Newquist, Xavier Gareau was a family friend who sang "Dixie" ( John spent time in New Orleans ) was distinguished looking with a white goattee. John Otto was an aged former pastor . The anniversary was an all day affair, with my dad serving mass in the morning, and being given the day off from school. Late in the evening he remembers carrying some of the gifts to John's house at the end of cool but nice day. by Mike Newquist (Bud's son) 8/29/99

This news clipping appears to be from an edition of the Chicago Tribune in April 1932: "Mr. and Mrs. John Newquist celebrated their golden anniversary Thursday with a dinner and reception for friends and relatives at their home in Steger, Ill. Mr. Newquist was born 84 years ago in Sweden and came to Minneapolis, Minn. in 1869 and to Chicago about two years later. A cabinet maker and stair builder, he has had a hand in construction of several loop buildings as well as in the Columbian exposition of 1893. Mrs. Newquist was Miss Genevieve Coughlin of Dubuque, Ia., and is 72 years old. The couple have five children and have lived in Steger for 30 years. There Mr. Newquist has been a general contractor and builder. The sons and daughters are Walter P., John, Harvey, Elmer, Leonard, and Mrs. Mary Steevens. All except Harvey, who lives in Racine, Wis., are residents of Steger."

Among the guests mentioned in another news clipping about the anniversary are Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Newquist and two children, August Newquist and son, Willard, and Mrs. Charles Newquist, all of Chicago.
