Notes for THOMAS RANKIN: Thomas Rankin and Mary Isabelle Clendenin first moved to Augusta Co., VA, and then to the French Broad River area in eastern Tennessee (then the State of Franklin) about 1783/4. Thomas and four of his sons served in the Rev. War in Pennsylvania. Thomas was born in Derry Co., North Ireland in 1724 and died in 1810 in Jefferson Co., TN.

   Thomas Rankin, the son of John Rankin, was born in Ireland in 1724.  At the age of three years he accompanied his father to America, landing at Philadelphia.  Thomas was reared near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, before the Revolutionary War.  He married Isabella Clendenin, who was also a Scotch Presbyterian, daughter of John and Janet (Huston) Clendenin.  The date of their marriage was sometime prior to 1754.  They were the parents of six sons and six daughters.  In 1750 Thomas, his brother Richard Rankin, and his brother-in-law John Clendenin were collectors for East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.  In 1762 Thomas and his brother Richard were on the list of taxables for Allen Township, which is close to Carlisle and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  Thomas Rankin and his wife Isabella (Clendenin) Rankin were still residents of Allen Township in 1771.  Two deeds that they gave in 1775 and 1779 show that they were living in Fermanagh, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania then.  Being intensely patriotic, he served in the Revolution and later sold his farm for worthless Continental money, a circumstance which left him in poverty.  After this misfortune, he emigrated to the Southwest and settled in eastern Tennessee in 1784.  He made a home there in what was later called Jefferson County.  He had six sons, the four older of whom had served with him in the Revolution.  The five older, moreover, became elders in the Presbyterian Church.  The reference to Thomas Rankin's service in the American Revolution is found in Pennsylvania Archives - Fifth Series - Vol. 4, page 494.  He served as a private in the Pennsylvania Lines.

 William Rankin, son of Thomas and Isabella (Clendenin) Rankin, was born 1-27-1759.  He married Sarah Moore (b. 1764).  William Rankin was present at the surrender of Cornwallis.  He made a very hazardous trip with Mr. Bradshaw, a brother-in-law, among hostile Indians, to Alabama, to procure corn which prevented a famine in East Tennessee.  William died 12-13-1838.

Ann and Lionel Lacey lived near Nashville, Tennessee in 1791; Red River, Tennessee in 1798; Holston Settlements, Tennessee in 1800-1802; Livingston County, Kentucky in 1804; and moved to St. Clair County, Illinois in 1807.  Ann died in 1837.
