- ↑ The NH marriage record is an "addition" submitted by a great X 5 granddaughter, citing Source:Coburn, Silas Roger. Genealogy of the Descendants of Edward Colburn-Coburn. This error filled genealogy shows on p. 34 that Elias, s/o Robert, b. 22 Oct 1749 as specified in the marriage record, died young! Further, onp. 63, it shows a different Elias Colburn marrying Mehitable Wheeler, s/o William, with no marriage date given. Disconcertingly, this different Elias has a different birthdate on p. 63 (1752) than is given him on p. 34 (1762), one that appears impossible based on his parents' marriage date (1757). Sigh!
The newer Source:Bosworth, Kenneth L. Edward Colborne of Ipswich, Massachusetts 1618-1712 and Five Generations of His Descendants, p. 34, shows Elias Colburn, s/o William, b. 1762 [the correct date based on his parents' marriage] marrying Mehitable. However, this would make him 10 years younger than her, and since the Source:Blood, Henry Ames. History of Temple, N.H, p. 212, says this Elias Colburn and his wife moved to Temple in 1773 and had their first child in 1774, it could not be a man born in 1762!
A probable explanation is provided by TAG, Vol. 65 (1990), p. 152 ("William4 And Abigail (Wheeler) Colburn of Hollis, N.H., and Their Daughters Abigail Wheeler and Hannah Wheeler" by Douglas Richardson) and supports the marriage as added to the New Hampshire records. Source:Worcester, Samuel Thomas. History of the Town of Hollis, New Hampshire, p. 369, reports the second child of Lieut. Robert Colburn and Elizabeth Smith as "Elizabeth born Oct. 22, 1749, d." and lists the 7th as Elizabeth, b. 27 Apr 1759. Apparently the Colburn Genealogy realized the 2nd child was correctly Elias (the article confirmed this, the original birth record found not in Hollis, but in Monson, NH), but maintained the died young that was assumed based on the birth of the subsequent Elizabeth even though it was no longer valid. Elias did not die young, and lived to marry in 1773.
