Next step: Review your GEDCOM [14 December 2012]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Roll Ancestors & Descendants-1_2012-12-14.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Make uploading easier on yourself [25 February 2013]

They say "Perfection is the enemy of the good." We often have an inclination to smooth out all the wrinkles and then look for more, despite this sometimes causing barriers to progress. The builders of the GEDCOM upload interface may have been thinking that way when they built the rather complicated upload review interface, even though much less effort is necessary for an acceptable and useful upload.

I can see from your WorldConnect database that you have much well-documented research, and it really would be a shame if it couldn't get put in a place where it is likely to be accessible (and improvable) for the future. That's what attracted me to WeRelate and what seems to be lacking in most places. So I encourage you to continue to upload the core pieces of your research. (I also see a few peripheral entries without support; those parts should be left out while documented data remains to be handled.)

The GEDCOM upload can actually be reasonably easy if one only addresses the two required things:

  1. Remove warnings (or reduce their number)
  2. Handle any (possible) family matches that the review software finds

The other possible actions in the GEDCOM review interface aren't required, and in fact don't add very much to the final result. I try to keep my eye on the main goal: making the data and supporting sources available to later researchers. If one has the data and sources in a genealogy program, this can be done just by handling the above two areas during GEDCOM upload.

Do you need to make sure the places are linked to the right WeRelate Place: page? No, you don't. If your data already gives a human-interpretable place name, it doesn't matter if it links anywhere else on WeRelate; that's just a nicety that means very little (except, perhaps, in cases of very obscure and confusing places, maybe). So skip that step!

What do you need to do to sources during upload? Nothing. You seem to have sources attached to facts in the normal way; that's great and should work beautifully as they are. The upload will create "MySource" entries for most or all of them (and footnotes or citations for the others), and that works just fine for the important part: communicating to others what the source of the fact was. If you approach it this way, it's true your sources won't automatically point to the pre-loaded WeRelate "Source:" pages, but that's okay! That's only a nicety, and usually of little help when it is done. It's better than okay to omit such linking; it's great because it allows one to get more done.

So, please try uploading the easy way. Select small chunks of tree to put into a GEDCOM (as you have been doing), and during upload review, just handle warnings and matches, and nothing else. (I sometimes handle warnings by changing data on my home computer, either my master data or a copy, and sometimes I do it on WeRelate -- I found you can edit person data during the review process.)

I hope you give this limited approach a try. --Robert.shaw 17:03, 25 February 2013 (EST)

Jan Mangelse and Tryntje Roll.ged [27 February 2013]

Hello, I took a look at your GEDCOM file that is in admin review. It contains only two people, both of whom you have excluded (so there is no data to import). I am wondering if this was a test import or if perhaps you did not mean to exclude those pages. Please let me know if you would like for me to delete or import your file. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:05, 27 February 2013 (EST)

Preserving your genealogy in yet another way [3 March 2013]

Hi, WHR!

As you may be aware, I recently read right through a section of the Watercooler in which various contributors expressed some dissatisfaction with this site. I added a comment that an alternative for some such people might be Familypedia.

To show you how Familypedia works, I've added pages for some of your folks. You can find them by starting at http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Adwalton/bdm. If you want to try out the form for adding individuals, I suggest you work your way down to W.E.R. at the bottom of Lucy's descendancy listing and click on the green button showing his father's name. Doing it that way, you are likely to find several fields already filled in, and you needn't enter anything in his marriage or children fields because the program gets them from his wife's page if his fields are blank.

Kind regards. Robin Patterson 20:58, 2 March 2013 (EST)
