Next step: Review your GEDCOM [28 March 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded roth desc priv-trs.GED, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Little problem with your gedcom [28 March 2010]

Hello and welcome to WeRelate. Thank you for submitting your gedcom file. I have reviewed it and there are some names on the People tab that are malformed. Please edit those where you have entries such as (wife of ...) as they will not create properly named pages. We Relate is different from other sites in that a web page is created for each person and we need to standardize the naming of the pages. Once you click the Edit link in the bottom panel, you will see that the given name was put in the wrong field. If you want to keep the "wife of" phrase it can go in the suffix field. Leave the surname blank where you do not know the maiden name. Once you are finished, return to the import tab and click the Ready button. Thanks. --Judy (jlanoux) 21:11, 28 March 2010 (EDT) (WeRelate volunteer)

roth desc priv-trs.GED appears to overlap a previously-imported GEDCOM [28 March 2010]

The pages from this GEDCOM have not yet been generated because they appear to match pages from a GEDCOM you have previously imported to WeRelate.

If you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM and you want to replace that tree with this GEDCOM, you need to delete that tree first so duplicates aren't created when you import this GEDCOM. Click on Trees in the "My Relate" menu, then click on the "delete" link next to that tree. Please be aware that any pages in the tree that are being watched by others won't get deleted. Once that tree is deleted you can create a new tree and re-upload this GEDCOM into it. (We're planning to make re-uploading GEDCOM files much simpler soon.)

If you don't think you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM, or if the two GEDCOM's don't overlap that much, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org and we'll go ahead with the import.

Your gedcom troubles [29 March 2010]

Hi, I am sorry you are having trouble with your gedcom. I answered your msg on Support but I want to make sure you understand what to do. I removed your first file. Now you can upload your new gedcom without getting the overlap error. Once you have loaded your new file, check the Person tab and make sure the names look correct. You have a preview of your new web pages in the bottom panel of the page. You may have to slide the divider bar up a bit to be able to see it well. For the people with no surname, you may need to edit their page in the bottom panel. There is an edit link under the page title. Surname needs to be blank. You can put the "wife of" phrase in the title suffix field. These often do not import properly because different software handles names differently and users do different things with the same software. It's a good idea to work through all of the tabs checking each line so that your new pages come out as you would like. I am watching this page, so you can post any questions here. --Judy (jlanoux) 11:01, 29 March 2010 (EDT) (WeRelate volunteer)
