Run with what you've got... [29 April 2008]

It might be useful for you to pay attention to the place name set in werelate for your off-line work as you go forward, but I certainly wouldn't suggest that you delete and re-upload at this point. It's more important to have your data integrated with the overall set than to get a few place names more correct.

It would be far more useful for you to do what you probably want to do anyway - work through the pages that represent your core area of interest and add as much source material as you possibly can. Work back through the ancestry that you've done and review what you see in the merged pages. Improve them if you can so everyone can benefit.--Jrm03063 22:26, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, I can make changes much more efficiently in my offline program. So, given my time limitations I just might continue to do that and not do much online. I have other software that creates CDs from my offline data. I read some comments at the Water cooler just now that makes me wish I had not uploaded yet. Certainly in the Nantucket area I should just link to the work of others. I underestimated the sophistication of this website and did not have the "feel" of collaboration. Is there any quick report to list where I might have duplicated other's work?--Stoney7path 22:33, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

Pardon me for butting in here, I have my own struggles to deal with, but I do have a couple comments here. My understanding is that if you take down your tree, All pages that have been edited by others, or added to someone's watch list will remain. the rest will be removed. The things you want to minimize are creation of multiple entries and what I call the living dead. Any entry for a person born less than 110 years ago with no death date, or any person with neither birth nor death ate will be shown as Living and their given name will be suppressed. When any of your pages are edited you will receive a message to that effect. Keep a list of those pages so when you re-upload, you will know the pages you have duplicated and need to merge. Here is a procedure for GEDCOM uploads. I use Paf, but it should work with any program.
To prepare a GEDCOM for an ancestry tree upload from PAF. Find the earliest generation with living individuals, then determine the latest generation without living individuals. More than likely the first will contain the children of the second. If this is the case select the closest parent of a member of the older generation to your family of primary interest.Using that person as the root then using advanced search, do a partial export to GEDCOM of all of his or her ancestors, ancestors’ siblings, siblings’ spouses, spouses’ parents, siblings’ children, or whomever you wish to include. Include all information on living people. Select 2 generations of descendants and as many of ancestors as you wish. Next create a new PAF file and import the GEDCOM into it. Then edit the file by deleting all individuals not known to you to be deceased. This assures that names of early individuals too old to be still living will not be lost. Finally, delete all persons previously uploaded that link trees together. Export the entire remaining file back to the GEDCOM, overwriting the previous GEDCOM that you created and upload it. All that you have to do now is restore the links for the individuals in previous uploads to their respective families contained in the latest uploads. Finally delete the GEDCOM and PAF file from your PC. Some discretion must be used in selecting the root individual to assure you include whom you want and to exclude the most overlap. I hope this helps.--Scot 12

Thanks for those instructions. And the info about how tree deletion works. It gives me a path to follow. Exactly what I was looking for.--Stoney7path 13:36, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

Hang in there.... [29 April 2008]

Given a choice, if I had a multi-thousand person GEDCOM I would probably upload it in stages. I would upload a fragment into a tree of its own called something like "upload1". I would work through the pages in that tree, massaging them to get place names standardized on werelate terms, dates and other data into an improved form and so forth. When I finished an initial bit of work with each page, I would pull it from the working tree and add it to my default tree. Any family pages that have a sequence number above "1" are apt to be duplicates, so I would pay special attention when I found a family page with a sequence number above "1".

I would also strongly encourage you to not be deterred by the capabilities and layout of werelate. As sophisticated as TMG is, and as good as you may have become with it, it's really a generation behind (as are all the programs out there now). You really want to be able to layout your informtion in a way that's optimized for web display, and that means something like writing in html or wiki. The former is burdensome and the latter may not be available for use as a basis of a commercial product. Those older programs can produce html reports, but that's not at all the same thing. Werelate also solves the problem of making your data available to other researchers and family members in real time, without you having to do anything. It's not unusual to make a change, see someone else make an additional change building on your work a few minutes later, and then you go back and build up a little more - all within a few minutes.--Jrm03063 22:52, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

Hi Vickie, Well, you have my CDROM. As far back as Elias and Sarah Ann things get pretty sparse. So I am still struggling to find their info, and especially their parents are very tough. I would love to connect them better. So I can't give you stuff like newspaper clippings because newspapers that far back didn't normally have the things like they do today. Next step: Review your GEDCOM [3 February 2019]

You're not done yet!

Now that you have uploaded ErmaBuddExportWeRelate.ged into our review program, it is time for you to match your data to ours. Your next step is to review and resolve any potential warnings that your file might be showing and to match place names, source names and families to pages that may already exist in our database.

Notes:

  • You must complete all the steps before your GEDCOM can be considered for import. - We will keep your file in the queue for two months to give you time to finish, and you do not have to finish all at once.
  • If you did not follow the instructions for preparing your data before uploading your file or if your file does not contain at least one date and place for each person with sources, it is likely that your file will be rejected.
  • Volunteers are here to help. Please read the instructions first, but if you get stuck or have any questions, you can leave a message on the page for the GEDCOM review team. One of our volunteers will respond shortly.
  • Once you have completed the review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import on the last screen, one of our volunteer administrators will review the file again and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24-48 hours. Please allow a little extra time around the holidays. When the import is finalized, you will receive a follow up message here on your Talk page.

Calendar changes in 1751 [2 February 2023]

Hello Marvin,

In 1751 the calendar was changed from the Julian Calendar in which March was the first month of the year to the Gregorian Calendar in which January became the first month of the year. Here is a link to an explanation that will help you: https://libguides.ctstatelibrary.org/hg/colonialresearch/calendar.

Thanks for being a part of WeRelate. --Susan Irish 16:32, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [26 July 2023]

You're not done yet!

Now that you have uploaded MarvinBuddDeadRelatives.ged into our review program, it is time for you to match your data to ours. Your next step is to review and resolve any potential warnings that your file might be showing and to match place names, source names and families to pages that may already exist in our database.

Notes:

  • You must complete all the steps before your GEDCOM can be considered for import. - We will keep your file in the queue for three months to give you time to finish, and you do not have to finish all at once.
  • If you did not follow the instructions for preparing your data before uploading your file or if your file does not contain at least one date and place for each person with sources, it is likely that your file will be rejected.

Potentially living people [30 August 2023]

Hi

WeRelate has a program to identify pages for potentially living people, and this morning it identified 11 pages from your most recent upload.

Person:Jimmy_Partain_(2)
Person:Aloise_Geoffrian_(2)
Person:Arthur_Pollauf_(2)
Person:William_Kasper_(1)
Person:Paul_LeCount_(2)
Person:Don_Stevens_(1)
Person:Ellen_Groves_(3)
Person:Lucy_Switzer_(1)
Person:Mervil_Carmickle_(1)
Person:Thomas_Lawrence_(83)
Person:Mayme_Gilliatt_(2)

Even though these people may have been born more than 110 years ago, WeRelate doesn't know that and therefore considers them to be living. You will have to enter dates for all these people. Otherwise, their pages will be deleted soon. If you need more than a week for research, please respond here to let me know. Thanks.--DataAnalyst 12:37, 24 August 2023 (UTC) (Volunteer administrator)

I believe I have added dates to all, but only a prudent marriage date for Thomas A Lawrence was available from a newspapers.com marriage index. I hope that will suffice because I don't have more info available and these people are distant relatives. Let me know if there is more I need to do.--Stoney7path 22:02, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
