1870 Census template [27 April 2011]

Hi LulaBelle,

Is there a reason you deleted the "General Tips" header on the 1870Census template? That makes it inconsistent with all the other templates and leaves a lot of pages without a header. I'm going to revert that change, but if there's an issue that prompted you to make the change, we can try to address it in another way.--Amelia 22:16, 26 April 2011 (EDT)

Amelia: I'm afraid I may have broken the template while trying to fix the Source page. I didn't realize that. I think the Source is finally fixed. When I first followed your instructions on creating the source, the header didn't show up in the orange font. When I tried to fix that, I somehow found myself on the Template page (didn't even know such existed!), then the header showed up twice in the orange font on the Source page. I just kept fiddling until I think the Source page may be okay now. Or at least it was the last time I looked. I must have done something inadvertently to the Template. I'm so sorry if I did!! In trying to COPY and paste, I may have CUT and pasted. That's all I can think of that I might have done to the Template, and I'm not even sure I did that. So, the short answer to your question: Musta done somethin' DUMB! Thanks for catching it and reversing it!

Hi there... looking at what was linked to the template and the history, it looks like you had some extra spaces before the template reference, which was probably causing it to behave strangely. Everything looks okay now. One thing I'd suggest is that you use the "show preview" button always before saving - I'm seeing a lot of serial edits of the same page in your contribution list. By using Show Preview, you can always see what something looks like before you save (and can tell what page you're editing ;-) Don't worry, we've all done similar things, that's why we have watchers.--Amelia 23:49, 26 April 2011 (EDT)

Yes, Amelia, I think I remember those extra spaces -- probably started a snowball. Re the Preview: I was using that a lot at first, and usually do. But with the Rawleigh Hallmon page, when I started adding sources and notes, there came a point when the Preview was NOT showing a real PREVIEW -- as in where the notes and reference numbers were going to end up and in what order the references would finally show. I still haven't figured out how to get a reference number in the right spot for reference number 3. I had thought that Notes would show up in a different place from Sources -- at least a separate list -- but then they all ended up jumbled together in ONE list. If I ever get Rawleigh figured out, I might get the hang of this Wiki thing! Anyway, I do understand what you're telling me. THANK GOODNESS for Watchers (and Fixers)!

Can you explain what you don't think you're seeing in preview? Where is it you want reference 3? The fact that the sources and notes end up together is a little disconcerting at first, although that is how it's supposed to work (now - it's a pretty recent change, so there may be some kinks still).--Amelia 12:09, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Amelia-- I don't know that I can explain what I wasn't seeing in preview. I seem to be seeing everything today! Maybe it was just me those other times.

Today, I'm still trying to figure out how to add the reference NUMBER that refers to the record of the SECOND marriage of Rawleigh Hallmon on Rawleigh's PERSON page. On the EDIT page for the person, I do not see a box in which to place the reference number next to the Marriage event. Also on the PERSON EDIT page, in the space where you can add Events, there is no event designation for a marriage. Such as "Addl Marriage," which is sort of what I thought I might find in that dropdown list, among the numerous other very specific event options. I did see Other in the dropdown list, but that is so vague that I didn't even try it.

I have family pages for both of his marriages, and I can reference the marriage record correctly on the FAMILY page for his second marriage, but I can't put that tiny number 3 beside the word Marriage on his PERSON page. (I've placed it beside the appropriate variation of his name spelling, because that's one of the places where that name variation appears, but the number also belongs next to the Marriage, which field is apparently populated FROM the Family page.) Have I missed something that's really obvious? Maybe I'm just missing something in the navigation? I've been looking through the Help pages but there are so many of them that I don't know if I'll ever get through them all!! So far I haven't found any help about "additional marriages" for a Person.

Ahh. No, you haven't missed anything, you've just encountered an annoying bit of the UI that hasn't been resolved to people's satisfaction yet. The person page pulls in the marriage information from the family page(s) for that person, but without the citation. You add the citation on the family page, and you cannot add or edit or otherwise make it appear on the person page, even though, as you've noticed, it shows up in a list of events that are (should be) all sourced and that's weird.--Amelia 13:34, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Well, thank you. That makes me feel better. In the grand scheme, it may not be such a big deal; after all, the reference IS available fairly easily. Since it was something that drove me NUTS for a while, it would be nice to see a more precise resolution. But at least now I can move on to the next challenge.--LulaBelle 13:56, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

$3.00 death certificates [27 April 2011]

Hi I removed the link to the $3.00 death certificates. She was not able to do this any longer.--Beth 17:58, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Too bad. They get rather expensive when you can't find them on any free website, and the ones you have to pay (including the Health Dept. or state Vital Statistics), you will have to pay almost the same for them to search and maybe still find nothing! --LulaBelle 22:09, 27 April 2011 (EDT)
