Your user page at WeRelate [4 June 2008]

Kim, I have a bit of info on Mary Jackson who married Abraham Shotwell. But I don't want to add to their family page without contacting you first. I don't find a user page or profile page. Are you active on WeRelate or just sort of watching it while it is still in beta? I haven't uploaded my data base yet but am probing around trying to learn how this will work. I love the concept of collaborating with others but there is quite a learning curve. I believe you can answer me here at this page and I will be notified when the page changes.--Janiejac 16:00, 4 June 2008 (EDT)

Abraham & Mary's marriage date [5 June 2008]

One of us has got our finger on the wrong key for the date of their marriage. You have 1741 and I have 28 12m (Feb) 1750/1751. This is Quaker dating and I've been told to leave it as I find it and not try to convert it to our calendar, but I do put the month in ( ). Quaker 1st mo is March, so the 12th month is Feb. At least that's the way I figure it. You can google Quaker dating and get lots of explanation. If you think I'm wrong, pls let me know.

The only thing I've done is create the source page for Abraham's will info and add that note. Most of what I know about Mary is from other researchers on rootsweb who I have come to respect; but I don't know if you want info from that kind of source.

It's one thing for me to upload a GEDCOM with all 'my sources' such as rootsweb charts, but it's another thing to create a source page like that on someone else's tree. I'm too new at this to be doing that. Also, I see that I don't have respository info for the Mayflower source I created. When I was gathering this info, I didn't realize that was going to be important. It's called learning as I go.

My Jackson data base, with Mary Jackson and Abraham Shotwell info, has not been uploaded yet to WeRelate, but if you want to see my web site, it is [1]. My sources and notes are there if you want them.--Janiejac 22:15, 4 June 2008 (EDT)

After reviewing the "source" I had for the marriage of Mary and Abraham, I'm really not surprised that I did not have the Quaker date listed. I'm well aquainted with the Quaker system and of the significance of their calendar year. Where there is one family of Quakers in a line, that typically means there are several more waiting to be discovered. I have six or seven lines of Quakers that intermarried through several generations. I believe some of the lines are associated with the Quakers, if my memory serves me correctly.

I did look at the page where I found the information for the date of marriage Abraham and Mary (http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=batemanp&id=I2774) and found that the information was as sketchy as I had thought. A bit of a side note: I am fairly sure that this mistake was part of my early research and as such, I am having the joy of correcting my ignorance in regards to sources and proper research methods. The source that was cited on my source should be able to clarify this matter with a bit more research.

The Ancestry.com tree that I pulled my information from cited the Rahway and Plainfield Monthly Meeting records, of which I visited and found the following information:

Shotwell, Abraham Married: Jackson, Mary Year: 1741 Page #: 007

I believe that this page is the actual page for the Plainfield Monthly Meeting, which I gather is still a practicing church. You can visit the webpage at: http://www.plainfieldquakers.org/.

I had some trouble finding some of the research that I have but located a source of Google books. Ambrose Milton Shotwell published a book about some Quaker families, including the Shotwells, in 1891. I would encourage you to look at it but with a very discerning eye. I found what I believe to be inaccuracies, which may be in part because of lack of access to records. I will try to sort through the backlog of research that I have to locate my "good" Shotwell information.

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. I will see that I follow up on this as soon as I can.--Kim Ostermyer 23:19, 4 June 2008 (EDT)

Hmmm . . . Two different sources, two dif dates. I checked the source you gave above and sure enough it says 1741. I went to check my source and they've moved the URL! but I did find it and will have to change the source URL on my site. It is here:http://dunhamwilcox.net/nj/woodbridge_nj_vrs2.htm and it says
"SHOTWELL, Abraham (Woodbridge) & Mary JACKSON, 28th of 12th Mo, Woodbridge, 1751". So what to do?? If we ever find all the children's birth dates that should make it easy to chose. But I don't have that info.

So it's been an interesting experience and I'm still learning my way around WeRelate. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am. I'm looking forward to when they have match/merge working well. Janie --Janiejac 00:25, 5 June 2008 (EDT)
