Next step: Review your GEDCOM [24 November 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Collins Family Tree.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Are you my cousin? [1 December 2011]

Hi Kevin, I see your updates to the Cheney family. I am a great granddaughter of Albert G Cheney and granddaughter of William. Are you also a descendent? Thanks for the updates to what has been posted! Chris--Chrisb 14:56, 1 December 2011 (EST)

Hello - It appears that we are cousins. If you are a great-grandchild of Albert G Cheney, that would make us 4th cousins once removed. You can find me on the tree by following Ogden Cheney (1829) --> Sylvester Cheney (1856) --> William Ogden Cheney (1887) --> Olive Cheney (1920) --> Robert Collins (1949) --> then myself... Kevin. It's always fun connecting with long lost relatives.

I am really new to the WeRelate site as a contributor, but have done quite a bit of research with the Ancestry website (which my account has expired), so I'm looking for a place to transfer all my work so it's not lost. I prefer this site over Ancestry, since people can contribute to a single person or family page versus everybody having their own version. I have quite a bit of information on the descendants of John Cheney (1605), that should eventually make its way into this tree.--KevinCollins00 15:16, 1 December 2011 (EST)

Living people [1 December 2011]

Hi Kevin, I am a volunteer admin here at WeRelate. I noticed from your message above that you have entered living people into WeRelate. WeRelate's policy does not allow the creation of pages for living people due to privacy concerns. You will need to delete any Person and/or Family pages for living people by clicking on More>Delete from the menu on the left. You can use templates such as Template:Pedigree3 to connect family lines using a chart on your User page. If you have any questions at all, just let me know. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:23, 1 December 2011 (EST)

Pages have been deleted. Thanks for the tip on connecting family lines.--KevinCollins00 15:30, 1 December 2011 (EST)

Cheney [6 February 2012]

Hi, I have been looking for some half siblings through the Cheney lineage. Ralph Cheney born 1919 in Ontario, son of Hiram Robinson Cheney and Lillian Burton. I have the family tree however am not getting far finding Ralph Cheney's children (my half siblings).--Mom73 16:04, 6 February 2012 (EST)

Living people [6 April 2013]

I noticed that you added a number of pages for living people. As I mentioned in the post above, WR's policy does not allow the creation of pages for living people. They are subject to deletion on sight. You may delete the living Person and Family pages yourself by going through your recent contributions, visiting each page, and clicking on More>Delete. --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:07, 6 April 2013 (EDT)

Jennifer - I was looking around the WR site and found a page that indicated WR used to allow pages that showed "Living Surname" (http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Help:Person_pages). I couldn't see anything that said that this is no longer permitted. I have no issue with deleting these if that is the policy, but I'd like to request your assistance in finding a solution to link trees through living people or capture place holders of living people. While doing this research, I've found it relatively easy to find information on long lost ancestors, but find it near impossible to find living family I'd like to connect with. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks, Kevin--KevinCollins00 10:40, 6 April 2013 (EDT)

Hi Kevin, the help page you referenced above does say "We therefore do not permit the creation of pages for most living people, and pages will be deleted when found." By most it means the only exception is for people who have a page on Wikipedia (this is also described on that help page). The focus of WeRelate is to share information on deceased relatives, and there is no placeholder functionality for Person/Family pages. The one way that people have shown living people is through a Pedigree chart on their user page. This is the same one that you have already added to your page. Otherwise, adding information on living people would need to be restricted to your own software database.
As far as connecting with living relatives, personally, I've been able to connect with living relatives without having to add pages for living people. In each case, they were researching their family ancestry, came across the WR pages, and messaged me directly because I was watching the same pages. --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:20, 6 April 2013 (EDT)

R.T.F Collins [25 June 2014]

Hi Kevin,

I'm new to this site, so please forgive the intrusive message. I'm trying to research information in to R.T.F Collins. His grave is in the Stonefall cemetery, Harrogate.

I visit the cemetery often and I'm always moved by his grave as it has a picture left on it. It reminds me of a dedication, bravery and spirit that he must have had. I have a deep interest on Bomber Command and the Second World War in general and just wondered if you were related.

Hope this message finds you well.

Kind regards, Chris--Thehoundsof 21:41, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Chris,

R.T.F. Collins was my great-uncle. I barely have any information about his service in WWII as I've focused most of my research on his personal life. If you have any information or stories you have come across please add them to his page: http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Russell_Collins_%282%29

Thanks, Kevin
