Next step: Review your GEDCOM [3 October 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Audley Paul.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Parents/Siblings of Audley Paul [15 October 2010]

Hello, I noticed that you've added two siblings to Audley Paul, John Paul and Anne "Polly" Paul. Can you share the sources of this information?

Audley Paul is generally recognized as a son of Rev. Hugh Paul:

Captain Audley Paul was a son of Hugh Paul a Presbyterian minister who migrated from County Armagh, Ulster, to Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was a very useful officer and was in military service nearly all the time from 1754 until the close of the Revolution. He led his company several times against the Indians. He was under Washington in the battle known as Braddock's Defeat, and he endured the hardships of the Big Sandy Expedition. His son relates in 1839 that his father received no compensation for these services. His brother John be came a Roman Catholic priest in Maryland. An unknown source says that Audley Paul married on 20 June 1755, in Augusta County, Virginia, Jane Lynn Matthews. She was born in 1734 or 1735 and died after 6 September 1778, but before 6 December 1802 in Botetourt County, Virginia. [Morton, History of Rockbridge County, Virginia, p. 269]

Hugh Paul appears to have been married abt. 1727, but you have added John Paul (b. abt. 1718), which would have been 9 years prior to Hugh Paul's marriage. Perhaps your estimate for John's birthdate is incorrect or you have the wrong John Paul? Would appreciate it if you'd share the source of this information.

Thanks much,

Jim (Volunteer Administrator on WeRelate)--Delijim 15:00, 7 October 2010 (EDT)

I think its best if we try to concentrate on what sources exist regarding the John Paul and Anne that you referenced. Could you add what records that you have regarding John Paul to his page? That may help to get to the truth of who Audley Paul's parents were. It's always best to concentrate on the records/sources of a person, instead of the "family tradition" that exists...

Thanks,

Jim:)

I'm not sure "generally recognized" is accurate judging by search results on books.google.com. Source:Waddell, Joseph A. Annals of Augusta County, Virginia, p. 369 ([1]) says his father is John Paul. It cites Source:Withers, Alexander Scott. Chronicles of Border Warfare, or, A History of the Settlement by the Whites, of Northwestern Virginia, and of the Indian, p. 53 ([2]), which says John Paul, but notes a descendant wrote a rebuttal saying Hugh Paul. However, it is all just one book versus another. It seems that one of the major differences is that the John Paul version places the marriage to David Stuart prior to immigration, whereas the Hugh Paul version places the marriage to David Stuart in the colonies. So, it seems to me the best chance of finding primary evidence to resolve this problem would be to focus on Hugh Paul and documents pertaining to him, i.e., that one of the keys then is Dusti's statement that "Diehl stated that Presbyterian records show no Rev. Hugh Paul in PA". --Jrich 01:03, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

Agreed, after looking through these (and the sources listed below), it appears that Morton ("History of Rockbridge") was incorrect in his assumption that Hugh Paul was John Paul's father. What didn't fit was the John Paul (d. 1794, Rockbridge) that User:Dusti uploaded as a son of John Paul. This John Paul was a son of William Paul, who left his will in Augusta County, who was probated in 1757, naming his son John, who is most likely the same John Paul that acquired 400 acres in the Borden Tract, just three years prior in 1754 (very nearby many of the witnesses and appraisers of William Paul's will and appraisal). )--Delijim

In reference to the search for the parentage of Audley Paul, I show the following sources:

"Staunton Spectator by Hugh Paul Taylor, 21 Aug 1829, lists John from England as the father and Jane Lynn from England as the mother. John Stuart was Jane's second husband.

"Chronicles of Border Warfare by A.S. Withers, pg 53, 1st Ed. 1831, gives the same information as "Staunton Spectator."

"Sketches of Some of the First Settlers of Upper Georgia" by G. Gilmer, pg. 40, 1855 lists John from England as the father with Margaret Lynn from England as the mother. John Stuart is the 2nd husband of Margaret.

"Chronicles of Border Warfare" by A.S. Withers, New Ed. footnote 2, pg. 55, 1895 now states the father as "Probably Hugh" from North Ireland with Jane Paul from Ireland as his mother. David Stuart is the 2nd husband.

"History of Rockbridge Co. VA" by G. F. Norton, pg. 269, 1920, gives Hugh Paul from Armagh, Ulster, Ireland, as the father, no other information.

"Virginia Frontier" by Kegley, pg. 435-6, 1938, lists Hugh from Ireland as the father. No other information.

"A Seedbed of the Republic" by R.D. Stoner, pg. 309, 1962, gives Hugh Paul from Armagh Ulster and Jane Lynn Mathews as his mother. No birth date or 2nd husband given. This is obviously an error as Audley's wife was Jane Mathews.

"Mathews Family History" by J.R. Boots pg 132, 1970 lists John of England or Hugh of Ireland as the father with Margaret Lynn from England or Ireland as the mother. No 2nd husband listed.

"Rockbridge Co., VA Notebook" By G. Diehl, pg 53, 1982 lists John, b 1703 d. 1739 most likely from Ireland as the father. No mother given but she was "probably Ireland" with David Stuart as the father.

I have not investigated these sources. I am merely presenting them as food for thought. They are taken from a list compiled by Dan Paul in his research. A good place to begin might be to verify that Chester Co., PA record concerning John Paul and look for associated material regarding any possible family. Unfortunately, I do not have the time presently to research this. I hope the above information will be of some use.--Dusti 01:34, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

John Paul [15 October 2010]

Just wanted to let you know that I made a change to John Paul who died in 1794 in Rockbridge. He could not have been a child of John Paul and Margaret Lynn, he was several years too old. He was a son of William Paul, who died in 1757 in Augusta County and named his son, John, in his will. William Paul was located in the Borden Tract (possibley living on his son John's tract), with many of the persons witnessing William's will or conducting his appraisal living very nearby John Paul's 400-acre tract on the Borden Grant. I had already had much information on him and merged him with the John Paul that you had as a son of the older John Paul. I will add more information to his line later, including his children's pages.

According to "Chronicles of Border Warfare", which I added on John Paul's page (that married Margaret Lynn), their son John Paul became a priest and died on "the Eastern Shore of Maryland", which rules him out as the John Paul of the Borden Tract.

Best regards,

Jim:) Volunteer Administrator on WeRelate--Delijim 10:10, 15 October 2010 (EDT)
