Last year we had a genealogy campaingn in Friesland, to find out whether we were related to Grutte Pier or not. For us it was disappointing, we are NOT related to Grutte Pier. Just because we descend from a noble family, and he didn't, I guess.. It could be that we are also offspring of king Redbad (Radboud), but that will be very hard to find out, so I cannot confirm this so far. Except for the runes, the Frisians were pretty late with their written records. I have also seen a 'record' showing that we (yes, Diane, you included and all of the Terpstra family) descend from Charlemagne. I found it on internet once, maybe it is somewhere in a computer, but I didn't take it seriously either. Since you named it, today, I will use FamilySearch too, I just registered. Thank you! However, I am using MyHeritage. I am pretty new with it, so I do not know all the ins and outs at the moment, but I know that it must be possible that I can add you, giving you access to all my findings. I have been using it now for a ten days, but I think it is a great genealogy programme. You can use it for free until you have got 250 persons in your family tree, but once building this tree, you will find out that 250 persons is almost nothing! Furthermore I use allefriezen.nl , wiewaswie.nl , voorouders.net , openarch.nl , tresoar.nl and, last but not least, werelate.org, where we have found each other! Most of it is in Dutch, but if you find any trouble with some stuff, just ask me, I will always help you. I cannot wait to send photos and letters to you. I am sure it will answer many questions. The reason why the Terpstras went to the USA is not known, to my knowledge. I think that they are an adventurous species, just willing to travel around the world. I like travelling very much, I will tell you many more in private. For now I do hope that you accept my FB friend request! ;-) Have a nice weekend, hope to hear from you soon again. Best regards, Sjoerd--Deroas 20:50, 14 January 2017 (UTC) [add comment] [edit] Johannes Terprstra's 'missing?'sister [14 January 2017]Hi Diana, I am intersted in the Terpstras as well. If you are one of the descendants of Johannes Terpstra, then we might be family, don't we? Which sister are you missing? I think I got all of them, so please tell me. Best regards, Sjoerd--Deroas 21:47, 11 January 2017 (UTC) Hello Sjoerd! I am your cousin, Johannes was my grandfather, Peter was my father. I live in Janesville, Wisconsin, USA and I am so happy to "meet" you! I have letters from your Aunt Wietske and Jantje written in 1934 to my Aunt Anne Terpstra Lyhus and a letter Cornelis wrote to Johannes in 1942 that is in Dutch but I did make out that he was worried about sister Tena in Stavoren. Recently I found 2 photos of Trijntje, Johannes and Jan Terpstra at school in Warns, Trijntje is in both, it was an exciting find for me. They are on Tresoar.nl. I was looking for Jentske/Jennie and found her on this site on someone's tree. I was then able to find her in Iowa. She came to the U.S. in 1911 at age 35 to join her sister Sytske/Cecila van dear Woud in Wisconsin. In 1912 she traveled to Orange City, Iowa to her Aunt Trijntje/Tena de Boer-Marra. She married in 1913 to Hendrickus Roseboom (on the marriage record she said she was 23!!) a son was born in 1915. Henry died in 1916 (accidental drowning) she married again in 1917 to Joe Ver Doorn and in 1918 had son Jake. I could go on and on but will wait for a reply as you may know much more than me. Did you hear any stories about why they immigrated? Have you heard stories that we have "noble blood"? Looking forward to your reply, Diane--Diane Terpstra 02:57, 12 January 2017 (UTC) Hi Sjoerd, do you use familysearch.org? I found Trijntje de Boer (Marra) a half sister to Pierius and her tree goes back to Radbod, King of the Frisians. Could this be accurate? I would hate to have my friends stop calling me Princess Di....haha. Is there any relationship to Grutte Pier? I thought the Lycklama à Nijeholt family was where the noble blood originated from and I did a google search to find more information. Do you know if Pierius was involved with a dairy cooperative in Warns? Are you on Facebook? We could be friends there and private message our email address. I must confess, I found a Sjoerd so if it is okay with you I will send a friend request. Have a nice weekend, Diane--Diane Terpstra 18:57, 14 January 2017 (UTC) [add comment] [edit] Terpstras in America [12 January 2017]Hi Diane, Great to hear that we are cousins! I had never ever expected to hear from the American branch. Thank you very much for your quick response. You named Winnifred, and I remember that name, for my father (Sierd de Roos) and his sister Jantje talked sometimes about her! And how nice you still have the letters my aunties Jantje en Wietske wrote! I have also some letters from the USA relatives. I also know that Anne Terpstra and her husband John and their children lived in Janesville. It was sad to hear that their daughter died from leukemia, she was so young. They gave my parents their pictures, when they were visiting them, and now I have got these. Of course, Diane, we are of noble blood! How could you ever doubt? ;-) As you probably know, parents used to name their children after their parents. So, the eldest son was named after his father's father, and the eldest daughter after her mother's mother. The second son was named after his mother's father, etc. Now we go to Jentsche Terpstra. She was the second daughter of Pierius Jacobs Terpstra and Wietske Kornelis' Attema. She was named after her grandmother Jentsche Lycklama à Nijeholt (1823-1888), wife of Jacob Johannes' Terpstra (1823-1855). Lycklama à Nijeholt is a Frisian noble family, and their genealogy is also on internet. You can find their heraldic shield on internet. Type in Google Search: Lycklama à Nijeholt familiewapen. Sytske was the first daughter, and named after Wietske Attema's mother. I will collect all the photos and letters from America, scan them and send them to you. In addition I will translate the letters for you, for I am sure that your Dutch is not as good as mine! ;-) Of course I will implement some of the information you gave to me in my family tree. If you have any further questions, please let me know. Is it allowed to leave your personal e-mail address here? I won't try now, I haven't read all of the conditions here... Have a nice day, hope to hear from you again soon, Diane!--Deroas 16:36, 12 January 2017 (UTC) |
